Christmas theme no longer working on Nest doorbell

DoYo
Community Member

My Nest doorbell has stopped playing jingles when the doorbell is depressed, even though the Christmas theme has been selected.  Having looked at other threads, it seems a factory reset will resolve this, but I really don't want to have to go through the pain of setting everything up again.

Does anyone have another solution?  Resetting hasn't resolved the issue.

Thanks

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this, as I can imagine it has been an inconvenience. I would definitely recommend a factory reset as that has been the only method of resolving this for other users. Please let me know if you have any follow-up questions or concerns.

Best regards,
Brad

Hey aatienza, Brad,

Thanks for your support.  In the end I had to do a full factory reset to resolve the issue, but I'd love to understand root cause.  Was it a firmware update, a software update or a dosconnect from profile for some server sIde issues?  If you can identify root cause you can mitigate it next year.  The factory reset is a painful and poor solution especially if the devices has been set up with multiple zones, not to mention that it wipes the devices history, I truely feel mitigation is much more acceptable than having to do a full set up from scratch.

Thanks again and happy new year

No, I haven’t. If I’m honest, it’s a little disappointing that I have to reset it, especially as I’d only had it for a week or so before I’ve startled having problems.

Hi Janthadeus,

The hack of factory resetting worked and as the theme is no longer available this thread can be closed, but I'm truely hoping that this issue gets resolved prior to the next season.

I'm also concerned that rootcause hasn't been defined, was it a firmware upgrade, a bug due to limited time themes or something else?  It doesn't breed confidence that the reason it happened in the first place hasn't been identified.

Thanks for the support,

DoYo

I’ve reset it now, and letting it charge. Should know more in a couple of hours. The battery life is horrific so hoping this reset will help with that also!!

@Nicky_d00

Thanks for reaching out and sharing your thoughts and concerns with us. At temperatures below freezing, the lithium-ion battery in your Google Nest camera or doorbell won’t be able to charge.

The batteries in Nest Cam (battery) and Nest Doorbell (battery) have the following minimum temperature requirements:

  • Minimum operating temperature: -4 °F (-20 °C)
  • Minimum charging temperature: 32 °F (0 °C)

At temperatures between -4 °F (-20 °C) and 32 °F (0 °C), the battery can still power your device, but it won’t charge. It may also drain more quickly than usual. At temperatures close to -4 °F (-20 °C), your battery may have less than half the life that it has in warm weather. Check out this link for more information.

Brad

Hi. So with medium use, and temperature of between 0-10 degrees C, is 8 days the correct expected battery life?

based on the info you sent, I would say it is too low. I just need to know, is it faulty, or just a poor performing product (8 days vs 3 months when the temp drops to say an average of 5 degrees C). I have no confidence that when the temp rises, I’ll get 10x the battery life

Lithium-ion battery-powered devices will do better when the weather is more temperate. The cold fluctuations in temperature can affect battery life. They will charge better in warmer weather. Of course, extreme heat will also affect them.

Brad

So, the tone seems to be working so far. Pain to set up zones and stuff again. We shall see regarding battery life

When it comes to keeping your Nest Doorbell (battery) or Nest Cam (battery) up and running, here are some articles and troubleshooting guides for the best charging practices:

  • This is a great article on general charging times for your devices.
  • This helpful article tells you how to save the battery with your doorbell or camera.
  • And this last article, will go over charging expectations when you may live in a cooler/colder environment which will address charging temperatures, etc.

I hope those articles help shed some light on charging and maintaining battery levels of your Nest doorbell or camera. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Best regards,

Brad

Hi brad

I live in the uk, temp is approx 3 degrees C currently, most of my settings are the default, middle values. The use is typical and the article suggests 3 months life, maybe less with cooler temp ie

  • Typical – about 3 months battery life (about 9–12 recorded events per day)

mine is lasting 8 days. Please help explain why

5 days and down to 25% battery life?? I can’t be having to charge this doorbell every week surely? The temp here has risen, and use isn’t that high in my opinion (maybe 8-10 events per day??)
