DIY mounting base plate for doorbell

I started using the Google Doorbell Battery 2 weeks ago. I lost the mounting plate yesterday. I really prefer to not have to wait for shipping of a new one. Is there any reason I can't make a template and cut my own plate, or is there something special about the one that comes in the package with the doorbell that marries the two together somehow?
