Doorbell (Battery) locking pin blocked

dgeris
Community Member

I have two doorbells (battery version) and both doorbells have the same issue. The locking pin is totally blocked.

Similar issue as in this post and this post.

Nothing helped to get the pin out again. I did not try the proposal in this post as that should not be the solution.

This is clearly a design mistake. if you design a doorbell that depends on a battery, you know you'll have to unhook it many times, so the one thing that should be robust is the locking mechanism.

It's made out of plastic, at the top of the doorbell, water and dust can easily go inside, so anybody can figure out this will fail soon.

Both of the doorbells are still in waranty, so I will just return them. Just raising this message to make Google aware, this design should be changed.

Hi Lance, appologies for the late reply.

Originally, I wanted to send back both devices, but I could not help myself and disassembled them to check what the issue was.

The first one contained dust and dirt and therefore the pin was blocked. As the unlocking spring is situated at the top of the device and the opening is not covered by for example a silicon plug or cap, rain and dust can easily enter and block the spring at the end. You cannot clean this from the outside and really need to disassemble the whole product, meaning you also need to remove the silicon sealing that is present around the spring housing.

It would have been better to foresse a sealing cap or maybe the spring should have been at the bottom of the device?

The second device had another problem. This was the first one a I bought and is a bit older than the other one. So this device was already unlocked more to charge the battery.

I have always used the original unlocking key.

Still, the plastic spring was damaged, although I never used brute force, just standard unlocking.

The material seems to be too weak?

Because of the frequent unlocking and pushing with the unlock key on the plastic spring, a burr appeared and as the spring has a tight fit in that rectangular hole, the burr blocked the spring to spring up again, therefore the pin got blocked. I have pictures but cannot attach them to the post it seems. I'm happy to share them with you.

I have now removed the burr and the unlocking works again.

But this should not be how consumers should solve issues.

By removing the burr, there's now even less plastic on the spring head to push on. Perhaps this should have been a metal part or a harder type of plastic? The plastic felt soft while cutting away the burr.

Anyway, I'm not happy with the design, this is not robust.
