Doorbell Camera Bracket?

Does my Nest doorbell and camera have to be mounted on the bracket to function? Or, can I unmount it and place it somewhere off-bracket and still have it work?

@Gordo1 Nest Doorbell (battery) isn't functional without it's mount/bracket I'm afraid.
