Hello, I'm an end user like you..   In order for the camera to always be on you need to connect it to AC power.   When on Battery it goes into sleep mode and it wakes up when it sees motion to record the clips and then it goes back to sleep.  If it stayed on running only on battery power then it would run out of charge in about a day.

Then there are (2) subscription options to consider.  It is called NEST AWARE and you usually get a 30 day trial when the camera is new.    NEST AWARE give you many days (I forget how much) of recorded clips stored in the cloud and you can access them anytime.   NEST AWARE PLUS keeps your camera recording 24/7 and also stores the information in the cloud.

Here is a link if you want more information on the Nest Aware.
