Google Nest doorbell battery power draining fast

I've had the Nest doorbell battery edition since Apr 10 2022. The first few months were great. I would charge it once a month. Over the last few months the battery has been slowly depleting more. I thought it might be because of the activity of my next door neighbors since they have a lot of kids. They might be running back and forth throughout the day but I just charged this thing last night to 100%, and left it for hours after I got the notification that it was 100% charged. This morning was the first day that my neighbors had moved out so there was zero kids and zero activity in front of my doorbell. I just looked at the full history and I can only save 3 hours but the last thing I see is me walking through that door right now so there has been no activity for the past 3 hours. When I came home from work today at 5:30 p.m. The battery level was at 32%. I literally put the doorbell onto the door on full charge at 8:30 a.m. this morning.

I've read all the documents about setting up activities, zones and things and My activity zone is set up to just the small area of my welcome mat in front of my door. I also have it set for packages only so it's not even looking for persons. I've gone through all the other help documentation that's been shared here. I am 97% sure that this is a defective battery. Can someone please help me?

Hello, since this is a user forum no one here can help with a bad battery and Google does not respond here.  I believe you have to open an official support ticket with Google and speak with a Google tech over the phone.  Here is the link to open the  ticket and be able to speak with someone.  Please return here and let us know how it went.

I believe the way it works is this: Just because you set up a small zone doesn't mean it isn't looking at everything else.  The way I think it works is any motion anywhere in the field of view of the lens will cause the camera to WAKE UP and eat up some battery power.  After it wakes up it then determines if the motion  qualifies as something that deserves an alert to you (IE the motion was in fact in your defined zone).    So if there is a bush or a tree waving in the wind and the camera can see it then it is waking up very often.  Or a street with many cars going by.

I still think your best bet is to open a support ticket and talk with an actual google tech on this.

Thank you for your response. That makes sense. I was able to use your link to talk to a tech support agent at Google over the phone and was talking to them within minutes of clicking your link.

The support agent said that even with a lot of activity, it should still last more than a day so it's likely an issue with the battery. I was able to work out a return with them because I'm still under warranty. Thanks again for your help.

That is fantastic news.    I think this will help other people to move forward if they run into this issue.

Hey folks,

I just wanted to thank you for your patience, and I am sorry to hear that you're experiencing troubles with charging your device! I know that keeping your Nest camera or doorbell charged is very important, and I would love to help you out.

When it comes to keeping your Nest Doorbell (battery) or Nest Cam (battery) up and running, here are some articles and troubleshooting guides for the best charging practices:

  • This is a great article on general charging times for your devices.
  • This helpful article tells you how to save the battery with your doorbell or camera.
  • And this last article, will go over charging expectations when you may live in a cooler/colder environment which will address charging temperatures, etc.

I hope those articles help shed some light on charging and maintaining battery levels of your Nest doorbell or camera! And a special thanks to @EmptyNester for your help on this thread.

Best regards,

Brad
