Google Nest (wired, 2nd Gen) doorbell - how to install without a chime

Does the chime connector need to be installed if I want to bypass the chime and simply have the doorbell ring on my Android phone and/or Google speakers? I have a transformer already installed - can I simply connnect the transformer directly to the Google Nest (wired, 2nd Gen) doorbell without the chime connector? If not, why? Thanks.

This should work , just be sure to disable the chime in the settings (if it does not automatically detect that one isn't connected)
