Installation manual for Nest Cam Floodlight?

pcorning
Community Member

My electrician has asked for an installation manual and electrical specifications for the Nest Cam Floodlight.

I can't find documentation online anywhere and Google Support doesn't know their products.  There was no documentation in the box.

Where can I download the installation manual?

I think they only have these online instructions, which include a video:

Unfortunately I can't email or print out a video to my electrician.  There's also nothing that answers their questions about if special boxes are needed for mounting the floodlights.

I'm blown away that Nest/Google have nothing in print.  Every other electrical fixture on the market comes with some kind of installation manual and spec sheet.

You are correct.

I think I'm all set, but I definitely have feedback.  The link you sent for providing feedback is not helpful.  I would have to speak out, or write out, everything on my phone or smart display.  Is there a web form or email instead?

My feedback from this topic:

  • Why is there no written Nest Floodlight documentation?
  • Why don't the Google/Nest Support agents know Nest products?
    • I spoke with FOUR different Google/Nest Support agents (1 phone, 3 chat).  All claimed ignorance for every basic question about Nest products, or directed me to the fictional "Nest Pro" to get more information (see below).
  • Why are support agents directing customers to "Nest Pro" when it doesn't exist?
    • (For the US) "Nest Pro" has been outsourced to a company called "Ontech".  However, if you contact Ontech (and I did), they state that they do NOT install Nest products any more as they don't have any certified electricians on staff.  Ontech also has no information at all about Nest product installation.  They were confused why I was contacting them for Nest at all as they don't install those products.
  • Why is there incorrect information being given out by support agents and on the Google/Nest support pages?
  • I'm also concerned about the safety of the Nest Floodlight as it has no ground wire.
    • I'm sure the floodlight passed legal all requirements so it can be sold in the US.  However, I'm not sure how.  I'm interested to see if my electrician pushes back on installing these fixtures due to safety concerns.

I agree that the lack of a written installation manual is a serious drawback. Other customers in this forum have asked about the dimensions of the electrical box on which the floodlight camera can be mounted, and there are no answers.

The installation video, at about 2:10 on the video, shows directions for a green grounding wire that's supposedly included.

I don't know anything about Google's "Nest Pro" program, but if you go to the "Professional installation and service" page on Google Nest Help (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9232427) and select "US and Canada" and then select the "Ontech" link under "Contact Ontech for basic installation and setup with the app", you get an OnTech page titled "Let's get your Google Nest set up and running" (https://www.ontechsmartservices.com/pages/nest) with with options and prices for installing various Google Nest products. I've never used OnTech, so I can't speak to how well it works.

The Google support pages you linked are incorrect, as are Ontech's own pages.  I personally contacted Ontech and they no longer do Google Nest installation.  They are no longer certified to do it.

I'm not sure what is going on with Ontech.  From my communications with them, it sounded like it may be a fairly new change that they no longer install Nest products?

I'm finding there's a lot of old or incorrect information at support.google.com and in the pages it links to. 😞

@pcorning

Boy, that's really odd on OnTech's part! On that OnTech web page, I can add an install to a "cart", select "proceed to scheduling", select a time for the install (starting as soon as tomorrow in our zip code), and get a checkout page that includes entering our service address.

On the main OnTech page, you can shop for Google Nest products, and they each present an option for a professional install.  Oddly, though, the Google Nest floodlight camera is NOT listed anywhere.  Maybe because, since the floodlight camera is hard-wired, it  requires an electrician if you're hiring someone.
