Nest Camera Battery - Notifications outside detection Zone

kapurar
Community Member

I have several of the new Nest outdoor battery cameras. All of the cameras are connected and hardwired to a power source. I have setup several detection zones and have turned off notifications for events outsize of my detection zones.

We live on a very busy street and I need detection for vehicles entering my property(defined by a detection zone) but not outside of it. I continue to receive notifications for events occurring outside of the detection zones. I have tried to make the detection zones smaller to ensure that the detection area is limited without success.

Short of turning off all notifications, I  cant detection to work properly.  So far the performance of these devices has been disappointing.

Anybody else having issues or can provide a solution short of returning the cameras or turning detection off altogether.

Curious.  We have one Google Nest Camera (Battery), and "People" detection works just fine. We have two activity zone with notifications turned off and one where we turn notification off and on as needed. Could it be that "Vehicle" event detection doesn't work as well?  (Our camera is plugged in with the optional power cable.)

I have the same issue. But it only started yesterday.

I have had the Google Nest Camera (Battery) for 6 weeks. I purchased one just to test it out. It has worked flawlessly. I have had a single zone that only captures vehicles that are on my driveway, and not the vehicles driving by on the road. Never had a false positive. Honestly, I have been super impressed by its accuracy.

I decided I am going to keep using it (and purchase some more) so decided to cable in the power permanently. Since installing the power yesterday, I have been getting false positives all day and night. Every car that drive by on the road reports as a Zone event when in reality it is way outside the zone.

I tried a couple of workarounds to see if I could fix the problem:

1) Deleted the Zone and recreated it from scratch (issue remained)

2) Created a second Zone, turned off Vehicle Detection in Zone 1, and enabled Vehicle detection ONLY in the second zone (issue remained)

3) Make the Vehicle Detection Zone super small in the Zone 2 (issue remained)

So my epiphany this morning was to turn the power off to the Camera. Guess what! The Zones are working again!

This has to be a bug that when plugged into permanent power the zones are not being honoured. I would be interested to see if by turning off the power on your cameras and letting them run on battery that you see the same result.

@marksull

That doesn't seem to happen for us. We've an always-plugged-in Google Nest Camera (Battery) since September 2021, with two zones, for the yard and the sidewalk, and the street is outside any zone. Today I turned on "Vehicles" detection and notification for our "yard" zone only for a couple of hours. Several vehicles came down our street and none were flagged as events or resulted in notifications. That was correct because the vehicles were NOT in our "yard" or "sidewalk" zones. During that same time, a number of "People" events were correctly flagged in our "yard" and "sidewalk" zones, including a USPS delivery person, but his postal truck was--correctly--NOT flagged as a "Vehicle" event because it was outside our "yard" and "sidewalk" zones.

Then, since we had never used vehicle detection before, I turned it on just for the street that is outside any zone--along with notifications--and the camera correctly flagged and notified about vehicles driving down the street.

Just our experience.

@MplsCustomer

i am not sure why you are in this conversation. Adding that you don't have the problem adds no value here. It works for you, great. The zones are not being honoured for us when plugged directly into power. Since I have unplugged from direct power the zones are now being correctly honoured. This is recreable problem.  I am more interested in the experience of @kapurar who is seeing the same problem.

@marksull

Sorry. I certainly was NOT questioning your report or that your problem is not repeatable. I merely tried to see if we could duplicate the problem; that's all.  I posted because, if the problem does not occur for all customers, then maybe the problem is more complicated, or possibly some cameras are defective. Other posts seem to indicate some of these new battery cameras (and their charging cords) are indeed defective in other respects (including possible differences between the enclosed charging cord versus the separately purchased optional power cable).

The only other thing I could add is that our battery camera is mounted high enough so there is little likelihood that an event occurring in the street could also be detected in another zone.

You are free to ignore my suggestion and perspective.  And best wishes on getting your problem resolved.

@marksull sorry for the delay in responding to your post but I didn't receive notification that a reply had be posted to my issue. I haven't tried to disconnect the unit from the power, but I will try and report back.

I continue to receive notifications for areas out side of my zone and short of turning notifications totally off I am baffled on how to deal with this. I should note that my cameras are powered by google power adaptors designed for outdoor use.   I should also note that since I posted the original issue, I readjusted the zones and made them considerably smaller just to rule out errors but the issue continues. I am also getting phantom detection in an area with no motion whatsoever.
