Nest Camera does not pick up cars at night

The Nest camera above my garage is not picking up vehicles at night. During the day, it works fine but at night it doesn't. I tried everything, but it is still not working at night. Any advice on what is wrong? I haven't had my cameras not even a month😔

@Boughtlessons

Is your Google Nest Camera (Battery) running on battery power? If so, it might be the fact that, when running on battery power the camera is in "Idle" mode, combined with poorer sensitivity at night.

If it is running on battery power, you could try plugging it in with the charging cord temporarily to see that makes a difference.

We've had a Google Nest Camera (Battery) for a year, plugged in with the optional power cable, and it flags events at night comparable to our older wired cameras, though not as good as during the day.

It's solar powered. Will that make a difference?

@Boughtlessons

I don't know. If your Google Nest Camera (Battery) is connected to a solar panel, it is still running on battery power; that's what the Wasserstein Solar Panel for Google Nest Cam page says:

"With sufficient direct sunlight, the Wasserstein Solar Panel trickle charges your Google Nest Cam (outdoor or indoor, battery) and the camera runs off the battery charge." (https://store.google.com/product/wasserstein_solar_panel?hl=en-US)

But this 9to5Google article says: "There are two types of behavior with the Nest Cam. When plugged into a constant source of power – wall outlet or floodlight – it can run 24/7 with no breaks in recording or communication with the Google Home app. Then, when it’s left on a battery only, it goes into a “dormant” mode unless it detects motion. That means you can’t see anything beyond the recorded event and you need to “wake” the camera to view live footage."

"With a solar panel, the experience meets a sort of middle ground. In the Google Home app, you’re immediately met with live footage from the camera, rather than needing to “wake” the camera. The camera is also more likely to hold its internet connection – I’ve found the connection to my garden camera, which is about 150ft from the nearest Wi-Fi point with a metal building in the way, is more stable since using the solar panel."

"You still won’t get true 24/7 constant video recording, but it’s definitely a step up." (https://9to5google.com/2022/07/06/nest-cam-solar-panel/)

I can only tell you that our own experience is that our Google Nest Camera (Battery), plugged in with the optional power cable, is "Live" at all times, records 24/7, and flags events at night comparable to our older wired cameras, though not as good as during the day. And when we check Settings | Battery, it says "Plugged in" with an infinity symbol.

One thing I don't know is this: does the included 3-meter charging cord behave differently than the optional 5-meter or 10-meter power cable you have to purchase separately? I wonder whether the 3-meter charging cord only charges the battery while leaving the camera running off of the battery, while the 5-meter or 10-meter power cables actually power the camera directly.

Sigh...I didn't expect this issue😔

I'm having the same exact issue. Will try it with a power cable.

UPDATE...Today, I slightly tilted the camera downward and change the sensitivity setting to maximum. The street light also seemed to shine a tad bit brighter tonight. With those changes,  tonight the camera actully picked up my car leaving my driveway/returning in my driveway.

Instead of backing into my garage, I drove forward. The nest cam did pick up my car THAT time. Oan...Google seriously needs to fix that issue😡

Thanks for your response. I truly hope Google looks into this issue. It is SO disheartening to pay that much money to have the cameras not pick up vehicles at night😔.
