Nest Doorbell wired 2nd gen no chime, blows transformer

My original wired doorbell died, the chime was removed and the wires were closed in the walls. We found the wires for the button, that the Nest Doorbell would be attached to and the wires for the transformer. We replaced the transformer with  a new one and checked the voltage and it was 22v at the outside wires. We connected the Nest Doorbell and the blue light came on. I started the setup and it wouldn't find the doorbell. Checked and the transformer was dead. Replaced the transformer and the same thing happened, the doorbell's blue light lit up, but then went to a flashing yellow and the transformer was dead. Since there wasn't a chime we didn't use the chime connector. Do we need to connect the Chime Connector inline with the Nest doorbell? We had the correct voltage at the front door for the Nest Doorbell without the Chime Connector.  Do I need to run new wires directly to the Nest Doorbell, and if I do, do I need to wire the Chime Connector inline?

It seems a really serious defect for a Google Nest doorbell to blow out two transformers.

Are you sure your doorbell is wired correctly? (You do not need a chime connector if you do not have a doorbell chime.)
