Nest Doorbell (wired Gen 2): Zone Event History / Notifications Issue

Ontario1
Community Member

I have a new Google Nest doorbell (wired gen 2) with new Nest Aware.  I have established a zone 1 to stop notifications for persons walking along the sidewalk (I kept packages notifications). However, I have selected to retain video event history for people (and packages) in this zone.  There are separate toggles and setup selections for event history retention and notifications on these gen 2 cameras. It appears that video event history is not being retained for people events in zone 1 when I turn off notifications for people in zone 1.  With event history turned on for people in zone 1, I should be able to keep getting event history even if I toggle the notifications off for people in zone 1.  (For older Nest cameras (viewed / set up in Nest App, it appears that the events are all captured in event history, and you can select which event types you get notifications for.)

Do others have this issue?  It may be that Google is required to do an update to fix this.

Thanks.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this, as I can imagine it has been an inconvenience. I would love to look into this further for you. I have seen that to get them working like they should, deleting your zones and adding them back in with the settings you want, tends to be the best method. Think of it as a restart for this feature. Please let me know if you still need further assistance.

Best regards,
Brad

Hi everyone,

@Ontario1 It's us again. I'm bumping up this thread to ensure that everything is covered here. Were you able to read the information and the steps suggested above? In case you have an update, you know where to find us.

I appreciate the help, Brad.

Thanks,
Emerson

Thanks Brad and Emerson. I am providing an update on the situation with my Google Nest Doorbell (wired Gen 2). With Nest Aware (the new version).

I removed the zone I had established and then exited/re-entered the Google Home App and added it back in.  I asked for event history to be recorded for people, vehicles, packages in Zone 1 and no notifications. I asked for event history for people, vehicles, packages outside of Zone 1 and notifications for people/packages. I have just reviewed all the event history for the day since I had re-established the zone. For that whole period, I have no event histories for people walking across the field of view (in or out of zone). It is as though now the device has lost its ability to identify people.

I established the zone initially since I was getting notifications for people walking along the public sidewalk in front of my doorbell camera's field of view. I did not want notifications for that. But I did want notifications for people coming up to my front door.

It does pick up event histories for vehicles driving by, as expected.  I am a bit concerned now that something may be amiss with the device software.  Any idea why it would have originally been picking up people walking by and now it is not.  (I know they are there as I can see them from time to time when I check the live view.)  Does the device on-board algorithm evolve or something with time in operation? (Unlike my original Nest doorbell which relied on the Cloud for person identification.)  The new doorbell was just installed last week. Appreciate your thoughts/guidance on this.

And, just as I completed the post above, I received a notification for a person approaching the front door directly. So that aspect is working. It is just a question of why the event history for people walking across on the public sidewalk is no longer being picked up on event history. To further investigate, I also have had a period now with event history and notifications requested for people in and out of zone 1.  Thanks.

Glad to see that your doorbell is picking up people approaching. What are your settings like in regard to the zone 1? Is your sensitivity lower? Or higher? Please let me know.

Hi Brad.  With respect to your note above: Is there an adjustment for "sensitivity"?  If there is, can you please advise as to how to adjust this? I have not been able to see anything that allows me to control that. If there is an adjustment that could be why it seems to be different from when I had things set up originally with the new doorbell (somewhat less sensitive to people walking by than it used to be).  Thanks.

[PS: My current set up (and likely how it will be long term) is with a Zone 1 established along the sidewalk area.   I have it set up to capture event history for people, packages and vehicles in that zone, and notifications off in that zone. Outside of Zone 1, I have event history captured for people, packages and vehicles, and notifications for people and packages.]

I suppose I used the incorrect word, but sensitivity in regard to your notification settings would be for what type of alerts you have selected. i.e. Animals, People, etc.

Brad

Hello Brad. Thanks for your continued support. I think right now I will hold off on raising this further. For some reason, the behaviour seems to have settled down on its own and, while it would be interesting to understand why that happened, I think I will just leave things as they are. If things change, I will go back to the link you provided and submit the form. Thanks again.
