Nest Doorbell with 2-clamp chime and the original button

Hi,

I'd like to install my nest doorbell (2nd generation, wired) to collaborate with my existing doorbell button and chime to avoid changing the electrical installation in my house.

I saw the picture of proposed wiring on this page: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/12153643?hl=en (the last wiring diagram), but it shows connection to a chime with 3 electric clamps, while mine has only two (https://sklepelektro24.pl/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/zamel.com_SUNDI_GNS-921-schemat_a.jpg). I acknowledge that this chime is rated for 230V AC, but I plan to try using it with 24V DC, which - as I confirmed with Google in a support case, is OK for the nest doorbell itself. I hope that due to the simplicity of this chime (and at the same low power needs) it should work.

Is it possible to do such a wiring with 2-clamp chime, to use both the original button and the Nest Doorbell? Or maybe some sort of adapter is needed to make this work? I'm trying to set this up in Poland, Europe.

Also, do I get it right that connecting the nest doorbell with an existing, standard doorbell, means that pushing the standard doorbell button works similarly / exactly the same way as pushing the button on the nest doorbell?

Thank you!

HI Mariank,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand that you would like to set up your Nest Doorbell (wired) 2nd Gen. Let's find a solution together.

Just to be clear, to install the Nest Doorbell 2nd Gen (wired), you'll need to complete a separate electrical installation. Once you have checked the compatibility and voltage requirements, from there you can follow the steps to process the setup for your Google Nest Doorbell.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Regards,

Byron

Hi, thank you! In the meantime I reached out to nest support and learned that the wiring I had in mind isn't supported and I should have a 3 clamp chime for this.

I'll let you know if I have more questions, thanks!

Hi,

Overall what I'd like to achieve is to have video from the Google Nest Doorbell streamed automatically to my Android tablet on the wall after someone presses either the original doorbell button or Google Nest Doorbell button.

Here's how I'd like to approach this now:

  • have the wiring for them separate, i.e. (a) install the Nest Doorbell in different (parallel) circuit than that used by my chime and (b) keep my original, standard doorbell button connected to the chime
  • add a smart module in my original, standard button, so that each time it's pressed I can launch a scene e.g. in Home Assistant or send a HTTP request to inform Nest Doorbell or an app on the tablet that it was pressed
  • have Google Nest Doorbell send some HTTP request / another trigger to my home automation whenever its button is pressed; this way I could program this trigger to make the smart module ring the chime anyway

I have a few questions to check if that would work:

  1. Can I install the Nest Doorbell on a separate circuit than the chime?
  2. If yes, then would the chime connector be needed or not?
  3. Can Nest Doorbell send some HTTP request or other trigger when its button is pressed?
  4. Can the Google Home app show automatically the video from Nest Doorbell when its button is pressed?
  5. Can the Google Home app show automatically this video when some other trigger / HTTP request is sent (e.g. by the smart module in my original, standard button)?

Thank you!

Marian

And one more thing: I'd like to open the electric strike when Nest Doorbell sees my face or the face of my wife/kids. Is it possible to have Google Nest Doorbell send some trigger (like a HTTP request) when the device sees one of the specified faces?

Hi MarianK,

Thank you for your response.

We are always looking for improvements and for all your requests about the Nets Doorbell and your Android Tablet. Currently, this option isn't available for Nest Doorbell; yet, please share your feedback so it can address this concern to the appropriate team so they can work on future updates.

For your questions. Here are the answers:

1. The Nest Doorbell needs to be installed with the Chime; the independent wiring isn't available.

2. To get enough power to the Nest Doorbell and the Chime, we need to get the power connector installed.

3. You can set up your notifications on either your phone or the Google Home app to send a push or email notification when your Nest doorbell is pressed.

4. Yes, once the button is pressed, you will receive notification directly from the Google Home app, and your phone will display the image on the camera of your Nest Doorbell.

5. Yes, you can set up Motions features from your Google Home App to trigger any other person, animal, or sound.

Also, for your last thing about the electrical door open, you can submit feedback about this, and about faces, you can check Familiar Faces features to learn and activate. Here is a good article to check about these features with a Nest Aware subscription.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Regards,

Byron
