Nest cameras (Battery) not reflecting IP address changes

NearlyThere

Hi, I recently switched out of Nest Wifi and moved to Orbi. As a result of that, my default subnet changed from 192.86 to 10.0 -> it looks like my existing battery cameras are not picking up and getting a new IP. I had to factory reset my doorbell for it to get onto the new network. It would be a pain to do that for my other outdoor cameras. I tried removing the cameras from my app and reinstalling - but I fear factory reset is the only way. I could of course switch my new network back to 192.86 but I should not have to (I've also done some other IP reservations on that new network).

Any idea how to get the existing cameras to switch IP without a factory reset? reboot seems to not work.

Google Nest does not make it easy to change Wi-Fi settings for Google Nest devices. In fact, their recommendation when getting a new router/modem "is to update your home network so that the network name (SSID) and password are the same as before." (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9223711?hl=en#zippy=%2Ctry-the-same-network-name-and-pa...)  That's what we did when we got a new router/modem, and didn't have to do any updates.

If you can't do that, then you should remove the device from the Google Nest app or Google Home app while you are still on your old Wi-Fi network, then factory reset the device, and then reinstall it on the new Wi-Fi network.  If you fail to remove the device while on your old Wi-Fi network, you may not be able to reinstall it.

So it seems - I'm gobsmacked on how terrible this experience is - my first time seeing DHCP clients not renewing IP addresses even when I soft reboot them. This is only true for the battery devices. The hubs had no problem.

@NearlyThere

The problem is NOT with renewing the IP address.  The problem is that each Google Nest device stores the network name (SSID), password, and security info, and there is no mechanism to update it.  So without removing the device and doing a factory reset, the device is trying to connect to your old Wi-Fi network.

@MplsCustomer It actually is a problem with renewing IP address. The new network has the same SSID and password. Even if I soft reboot my cameras (Not factory reset), they don't get a new IP address in the new network (subnet is different). That's also why my nest hubs were able to reconnect without any changes. This behavior seems to apply to all my battery powered devices (doorbell and nest cams)

Oh, sorry; I should have paid attention to the details of your first post. I don't know why you're encountering what you are. In our case, when we got a new router and kept the same SSID and password, we did NOT change the subnet; it was 10.0 and we kept that.

I was just going to suggest that a restart rather than a factory reset would refresh IP addresses on your Google Nest devices. On some, that just means unplugging them for a short while, but on the battery ones you have to use the reset pin:

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9252162?hl=en#zippy=

But maybe you'll need a full factory reset.

I haven't run across this on ours;  we've never changed our subnet.

Yup I've reverted to factory resetting all of them. I wish Google wrote upfront that I should also factory reset them before removing them off my nest wifi. I read their suggestion of keeping ssid/password the same and went with it. I now have to pay a handyman another $150 to get a 20ft ladder and reset the two pending cameras. Oh well,  c'est la vie!

In good news, Orbi so far is offering great coverage and speeds relative to nest wifi. Hopefully, after today all my cameras will be back as well!

Hey there,

I just wanted to follow up to see if you still need our help. Please let us know as we would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

I appreciate the help, JT.

Thanks,

Archie

no I don’t need help. I had to factory reset every camera to make them work and had to in that process pay people extra to get to them. I continue to be surprised at how poor the product is in key parts which are  table stakes expectations in others.

Hey NearlyThere,

We’re sorry to hear that. This isn’t the experience we want you to have. Have a look at this guide so you can check how to properly reset your camera to default settings: Restart or factory reset Nest camera or doorbell. Let me know if you have other questions or concerns.

Thanks for chiming in, Archie.

Regards,

JT

I just mentioned above that I had to reset all my cameras. You posted a link explaining how to reset cameras. How are we expecting that to improve my experience?
