Nest doorbell goes offline when pressed

Looking for advice. I’ve read several comments and threads with people having the same issue. Our 2-year-old Nest doorbell goes offline when pressed. I tried the “hack” of turning off the indoor chime which “fixes” the issue of going offline, but we do not have an indoor Google Home speaker so unless we hear the notification on our phone we won’t know anyone is at the door. Defeats the purpose of having this “fancy” doorbell. If I understood some of the threads I read, some people received an update that fixed the issue. How do we get this update? I’m not going to attempt to take this doorbell apart to replace a battery. Why would Google not make that accessible for us if it’s not going to last more than a couple years??? I love my Nest Hello, but this is frustrating. Any guidance on how to fix this and have my doorbell function as it should (with an indoor chime AND no disconnection from my very-good WiFi) would be much appreciated!

@Monkeemama

When the internal battery fails, there is no "update" that anyone has received that fixes the issue. The internal battery has now failed on all 3 of our Nest Hellos, ages 3-1/2, 3-1/4, and 2 years. We've had our "Indoor chime" option turned off for a year, and rely instead on "Visitor announcements" on our Nest Hubs and Nest Mini. The Nest Minis sell for $49 and the Nest Hubs for $59, unless on sale.

(We also have silicone "skins" on two of our Nest Hellos because they started peeling.)

Prying apart the doorbell seems dicey to me (https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Nest+Hello+Battery+Replacement/131729) and it might not work.

Google Nest says they "cannot" replace the doorbell if it is past the 1-year warranty.

@MplsCustomer Thanks for replying. I was probably mistaken in what I read with the update or just plain misunderstood. Google should supply the hubs to those of us with failing units, in my opinion. I’m just so disappointed with the unit. I first noticed a problem at Halloween. I thought it was a glitch. We don’t get many people ringing our doorbell so I haven’t taken notice again until today when a survey taker stoped by and rang the bell. I was in another part of the house and grabbed my phone to see who it was and it said the camera was offline. That’s when I went searching for an answer. I found Reddit threads and threads here, many of which were closed and I could not comment on them. Sadly, when I do replace this doorbell, I will go back to the old style we had before. It’s not worth the money or aggravation to replace it with another unit that is bound to fail again. Again, thank you for taking the time to reply.

Hi folks,

@Monkeemama, thanks for reaching out here in the Community. To know more about this issue, I’d like to confirm, how far is it from your Wi-Fi router? Are there any appliances in between your Nest Doorbell and router that can interfere with the wireless signal? For troubleshooting, you may try restarting your Nest Doorbell and Wi-Fi router and monitor its behavior.

Let us know how it goes.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer.

Regards,

Emerson
