Nest doorbell wired does not power up

Hello,
My Nest doorbell (wired) does not power up. I have a 16vac/30va transformer which is pumping out 17.8 volts at the transformer and 17.8 volts at the bell, yet the Nest doorbell (wired) won't power up. No lights or anything.

Nest Support sent me a new unit thinking it was defective but still same problem. I've reset the device multiple times as well. Should I upgrade transformer to a 24vac one? Any other things I can try?

Is the Chime Connector wired correctly? Below is a link to a post in this forum with a wiring diagram.

If you disconnect your Google Nest Hello Doorbell and touch the two wires together, does your indoor chime ring?

Hey, yup, the chime connector is wired correctly . I ended up leaving the chime connector installed and just put the builder doorbell back  on (to test this and make sure that visitors can still ring the bell). The connection is good because ringing bell also rings the chime.

@redtsx

It seems unlikely (but not impossible) that two new Nest Hellos can't power up. What happens when you scan the QR code or enter the 6-character Setup Code during the install process )https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9247327?hl=en)? When you connect the Nest Hello to the doorbell wires, do you get any lights at all on the doorbell? Is there anything unusual about your doorbell chime? Is the Nest Hello securely wired to the two doorbell wires? If you connect the Nest Hello and press the button, does it ring the chime?

Hey, nothing happens after I connect. No light show up. I hard reset it but nothing happens then either. I can confirm it is getting the 17.8 volts but doesn’t do anything. When you press bell it doesn’t do anything no lights, no ring. I’m flabbergasted lol

I suppose it is possible that you received 2 dead, non-working Nest Hellos, but you'll have to convince Support of that.

When I scan the QR code, it just takes me through the setup process but then I hit a snag when it doesn’t power up, and then it asks me to check all the wires which I have already confirmed to be done correctly

support has been great so far. They just shipped me the second one.

Hi folks,

Thanks for your help here, MplsCustomer.

Thanks for visiting the Community. I'm sorry to hear that and for the delayed response. We appreciate your efforts on this. No worries, we'll get this sorted. Are the wires securely connected into your Nest Hello doorbell (wired)? What happens when you press the pin hole at the back of the doorbell near the top? Did you check if there's any damage on the wires? Also, do you have a computer (mac or windows) to test the power of your doorbell camera?

Going over the steps here might help:

  1. Make sure the wires are properly connected to the back of the Nest doorbell and that the screws are snug.
  2. Check the wiring at the chime and the chime connector to make sure it’s secure and that there’s no exposed wiring (Example: exposed copper shouldn’t come into contact with metallic parts of the chime or other wires, if there are loose or unused wires they should be capped off).
  3. Connect your Nest doorbell to a computer using a mini USB cable to test if it powers on. If the blue light comes up, connect the doorbell back to the wires.
  4. If all else fails, factory reset your Nest doorbell.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

JT

Hi redtsx,

It's me again. I want to make sure you're all good — how did the steps go?

Regards,
JT

Hey JT, I had already troubleshooted using all your steps before but still no dice. The chime wiring is good because I tested it with the old bell. The mini usb charge just gives the nest enough juice to make it past the setup but then it dies because the 17.8 volts isn’t enough to keep it alive. Should I upgrade the transformer to 24v?

@redtsx

We have a 16V 30VA transformer and it powers two Nest Hellos just fine.

Hey redtsx,

Great troubleshooting so far. We appreciate your efforts here. Could you connect your Nest Hello doorbell via USB cable to a computer then let me know how it goes?

Regards,

JT
