Nest doorbell, wired setup.

My existing wired doorbell uses a 15 VA transformer, so I assume it's not strong enough for the Nest Doorbell wired setup.  Using the optional power adaptor looks complicated.  Can I simply replace the 15 VA transformer with, e.g., a 20 VA transformer?

Hi David,

The transformer needs to deliver 16 - 24 V AC, and at least 10 VA (in North America) or 12 - 24 V AC and at least 8 VA (in Europe)? To test the transformer if it's delivering the right voltage, you can use a multimeter to check the wires connected to the transformer, chime and the Google Nest Hello. It may be that the transformer has enough power to operate the doorbell, but not enough to trigger any mechanical chimes etc.

There's a good third party article on this here:

Thank you for this info.  Assuming transformer inadequate, is it feasible simply to replace the transformer?

Yes.  Assuming that our transformer is inadequate (it's only 15 V), is it feasible simply to replace the transformer?

Absolutely, you can go ahead and replace the transformer.
