Nest products pre-installed in home refuse to register or connect

Just bought a house with a nest doorbell 2nd gen and three nest thermostats. I have scanned the QR codes in each, none registers in the Google Home app (upon scan, app just returns to the main screen). Did factory resets, still won’t register. I’m at my wit’s end here! I have chrome cast and a Google home speaker that connected and work fine. Help appreciated.

Hi @Ben12

Since these were pre-installed, let's make sure you run through the factory reset instructions first.

I know you said you did already but can you double check you did the right way for each one?

Scroll down to the Factory Reset section.

Restart or factory reset Nest camera or doorbell

Next, can you let us know the model of each device?

There are two "second gen" doorbells: the wireless/battery one from 2021 and the newest wired one from 2022.

As for the thermostats, are they all the same model? And which one is it? The "Nest Thermostat", the Learning Thermostat (3rd gen), or the Nest E Thermostat?

Unless you have defective units from who sold the house to you, I bet the issue is tied to not having a clean factory reset but we can try to figure everything out for you here. These devices might be linked to the old owner somehow and causing issues.

I can’t tell which thermostats I have, unfortunately. I have the wired second gen doorbell. I’m really annoyed that the QR codes refuse to register anything from any of these. I also did follow the factory reset instructions you posted, but thank you for including them. I have run the factory reset on the thermostats that is included in their menus on the devices themselves.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this, as I can imagine it has been an inconvenience. I would love to look into this further for you. Great suggestions coming from your fellow community members. Thank you for all the help, ya'll. I am wondering if the previous owner has fully removed their access to these devices. Do you have access to the original QR codes for each device? Please let me know.

Best regards,
Brad

Hey Brad. The original QR codes are all on the devices: those are the ones not working.

@Ben12

Are you getting error messages stating they are still connected to another account? Or is it simply they are not able to be added to your account? What sort of phone or device are you trying to get them added on? I would suggest trying another phone or device to add them in if you can.

Best regards,

Brad
