New Google CAMs Video Clip?

ae1m
Community Member

I have been using Nest cams and the Nest app for years.  Now I replaced some because of future non-support and migrated to Google account.  I added the new cams to the Home app, but they are not visible in the Nest App.  When I tried to add them, Nest App would not allow.

Now I must use the Home app to watch all my cams.

I cannot figure out how to review past events and create a video clip like I’ve been doing with the Nest for years.

Can I please get some support on how to do this?  I was just charged $150 for my subscription but cannot find this most important feature if I needed to show the Police for example of a break-in for example.

@ae1m

This is Google Nest's Help page on viewing camera history in the Google Home app:

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/10904254

Unfortunately, we can only download clips of detected events in the Google Home app. We cannot create video clips the way we can with our older cameras.

I mean... It's absolutely ridiculous isn't it. You can only take a clip if Google decide. What if you need something that wasn't detected, you just can't get it. What sort of security camera is that...

Hello everyone,

@ae1m, thanks for reaching out here in the Community. How's it going? Were you able to read the information from the link shared above? You can only download video clips from detected events in the video history. You cannot download video clips from footage with no activity. The maximum clip length setting for your Nest Camera or Nest Doorbell will affect how long video clips can be.

Give these steps a try:

  1. Open your Google Home app.
  2. Tap Favorites or Devices.
  3. Select your Nestamera.
  4. Scroll to an event in your Nest Camera’s video history timeline. You can also tap Event history for a list of events.
  5. Choose the event you want, then tap Controls.
  6. Tap Save clip to save the video clip to your phone. From there, you can share the video clip via email or other apps.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer.

Thanks for chiming in, Super_paulie.

Best,

Emerson

Why are you giving us instructions on something we know how to do already? The problem is that Google have removed a fundamental feature from the cameras and left them borderline useless.

Answer me this, what use is a security camera that doesn't allow me to view something that a Google event might have missed, like someone committing a crime on my property. What was the reason for removing this functionality?

Hi Super_paulie,

If you have the Nest Aware Plus which has the 24/7 continuous video recording feature for 10 days, you'll be able to review it from your Google Home app. In case you need to save a custom clip when there's no event detected. We recommend you use your default video recording app on your mobile phone and record the clip while playing it in the Google Home app.

Regards,

Emerson

So basically there is no fundamental functionality for it and it requires the capability of the phone to get it. That's not a solution, that's a fob off!
