New Google Nest Cam w/ Floodlight Streaming to new Chromecast w/ Google TV - Bad Framerate

I purchased the "Google Nest Cam with Floodlight - Outdoor Camera" as well as a "Chromecast with Google TV (HD)".  After some work, I have them configured on the same 5 Ghz home network.

My intent is to use it to stream my kids running around in the backyard while I'm in the house with the Chromecast on the TV.   So I'm watching the Nest Cam on the Chromecast.

However the frame rate is awful if there is significant movement.  I get a frame every 1 or 2 seconds, and sometimes it goes blank entirely for a several seconds.  But when I go back and check the event videos on my phone Home app, they play smoothly.  If I watch the live stream on my phone (also on Wifi) it is smooth.

To make matters worse, sometimes it plays smoothly for a minute before becoming awful again.

  • I have configured the video to "High" instead of "Max" (those are the only options).
  • I have disabled audio recording entirely.
  • I verified they are both on the same 5 Ghz network (checked MAC addresses on my router).  Chromecast reports signal strength of "Fair", I don't know how to check the camera's signal strength.
  • The wireless router is located about 20 feet from both devices, through walls and ceiling in a 100 year old house.  Materials are wood and plaster.
  • My Internet plan is Spectrum Ultra (500 Mbps down, 20 Mbps up).  Speedtests show actual 100Mbps down (while people are actively watching a stream) and 23 Mbps up.

Is 1 fps the expected frame rate for Nest Cam to Chromecast with Google TV?  Or am I doing something wrong?
