Not recording when app isnt live

Why am i only getting notifications when i have the app pulled up on my phone.  when my phone is asleep it doesnt record motion, Only when i have the live video pulled up watching is when it will tell me it detected motion?

Do you have the Google Nest Battery Camera and is it running on battery power?  When running on battery power, it is in "Idle" mode unless you're viewing it, so it has to wake up in order to detect an event.  We've had a battery camera for 2-1/2 years and it's plugged in all the time with the optional power cable.  But when we've unplugged it to test it, it does NOT wake up to detect someone walking right up to the camera.  So we keep it plugged in.
