Poor video quality at night in the cold

Chrishaugh17

I have noticed now since it’s winter at night my  wired doorbell camera video quality is awful and grainy. It’s fine during the day but at night it’s awful. Regardless of if it’s live streaming to even saving a clip, it’s always grainy. Anyone else having this issue?

Hi @Chrishaugh17!

Thanks for reaching out to the community. I am sorry to hear that you have poor video quality at night with your Nest doorbell, but no need to worry; help is here. Before continuing, I need to know a few things:

  • Are you using the Nest or Google Home apps?
  • How many devices do you have?
  • Since when is this problem presenting?
  • Do you have a Nest Aware subscription?
  • Have you had any Wi-Fi issues?
  • Previous troubleshooting steps?

I'll be waiting for your response; any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

Best regards,
Jeremy.

Hi @Jeremyg ,

I am using the google home app

There are a few devices but 3 cameras total, the doorbell camera is the only one having the issue

Noticed this about early November

yes I am an aware subscription subscriber

No WiFi or internet issues to speak of as the camera is oddly fine during the day

I have rebooted it, removed it completely wiped it clean and re-added it to my account, camera was replaced by google under warranty, checked all internet speeds and everything is working as intended. I’ve done everything I could think of short of checking voltage to the camera is self.

this isn’t wired to the house this is using the adapter google offers in the store with the doorbell cameras, also replaced that thinking my old one was bad with same results.

Hi @Chrishaugh17!

Thank you for your reply. That information is going to be very helpful to better assist you. Night Vision video quality can be affected by internet speed and other issues, but most Night Vision-specific issues are caused by the camera’s infrared light that reflects off a surface near the camera, like a shelf, window, window screen, or wall. Symptoms include:

  • A large light or dark ring in the video
  • A part of the video is bright white or washed out (typically on the side of the video).

Below are some steps you could try. Could you please check your camera’s view in the app after each step?

  • Clean the lens with a soft cloth that’s made to clean optics. Dust, thumbprints, and dirt can cause poor image quality.
  • Turn the camera so that any nearby surfaces or objects (like a wall) are out of view. If you have a Google Nest Doorbell, you can install the wedge to angle the camera away from nearby objects.
  • If a bright white shape along the edge appears while everything else is too dark, there might be a surface that’s too close to the camera’s view (like a wall). Angle the camera so the surface stays out of view.
  • Move nearby objects that may reflect the infrared light.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,
Jeremy.

@Jeremyg Alright give me a day or two to try and move the camera. I should also note that night vision is turned off. My porch light provides enough light for the camera and has never been an issue.  I have cleaned the lens already a few times with it still being an issue.

Hi @Chrishaugh17!

Thank you for your reply. Surely that was the inconvenience that the night mode was off. I agree. If by any chance, in that period of time, you encounter any other problem, let me know.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,
Jeremy.

@Jeremyg it’s still having the issue with night vision turned off. I was just letting you know it’s not on for all this.

Hi @Chrishaugh17!

Thank you for your reply. If the camera doesn’t automatically switch to or from Night Vision when the light conditions change, you might experience a pink, blue, or purple hue when you watch your camera’s video stream. You can try to do the following steps:

Make sure Night Vision is set to Auto. In the Google Home app

  • Tap Favorites or Devices.
  • Tap and hold your device's tile More Settings.
  • Tap Video.
  • Under Night Vision, select from Always on, Auto, or Off.

In the Nest app

  • On the home screen, select the camera they want to change settings for.
  • Tap Settings Night Vision.
  • Toggle the auto.

Note: You have the option to toggle the switch to Off, Auto, or Always on.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,
Jeremy.

@Jeremyg yes, I purposely have night vision turned off. Just wanted you to know that bit of info. I will work on moving the camera physically to see if that helps
