Spliting Nest Cams between 5GHz and 2.4 GHz?

RavenManiac

Is it possible to have some of my Nest Cams on the 5GHz Wi-Fi band and others in remote areas on the 2.4GHz band, or do they all need to be on the same band?

Also, are Nest Cams supposed to create links between each other to extend the entire network range? If that's the case, how do I know if that's working?

@RavenManiac

Our cameras and doorbells are on a mix of 2.4GHz and 5 GHz and all work fine.

Google Nest cameras and doorbells do NOT serve as Wi-Fi extenders.

Thanks for the info. I'm assuming that you're using 2.4GHz for devices that are difficult to reach from your WiFi router. How did you make the decision to switch these devices to 2.4GHz, and when you did, did you notice any performance or video clarity degradation?

I have a few Nest battery cams that I'm having difficulty reaching with 5GHz.

@RavenManiac

We have the same SSID for 2.4GHz and 5GHz; we don't manage which frequency each camera uses.

So you're using Smart Connect or something similar? How is that working out for you? Some people have said that they've had difficulty getting their router to connect to 5GHz when Smart Connect is enabled, even though the 5GHz signal strength is fine.

@RavenManiac

I've never heard of Smart Connect.  We have a Comcast/Xfinity router/modem and two Linksys routers serving as wired access points, with the same SSID on all 3.  We've had it for several years and have excellent results.
