The Nest app was way better than Google Home!

With the old cameras and the Nest app, I was able to select a portion of the timeline and make a clip out of the selection.  With Google Home, I am only able to download an event.

My camera caught someone trying to steal my golf cart.  The thief was there for over 5 minutes.  The camera only flagged about 3 minutes of the total time as an event.  With Google Home, I was not able to get a clip of the entire time, just what the camera thought was an event.  Google support was no help... they said that I should take a video of my screen to share it with the folks that needed to see what happened.

Come on Google... do better!!!

Yes, we should be able to get a clip of whatever portion of the videos that we require, else, we lose important recordings that were not captured by the Google events.

The video is there, you can view it, you just can't download it.  The Nest app was way better.

Hey everyone,

We understand that some of the features that you expect were not available. We also wanted to help you get the most out of your Nest cameras. To confirm, do you have a Nest Aware subscription? If so, you can check the full history from your Google Home app. Hit this link for more information.

Keep us posted.

Regards,
Emerson

Yes, I have a Nest Aware subscription. Accessing the full history is not my issue. I want to be able to download the video. AFAIK, there is no way to do this for Google Home (outdoor) cameras. I can do this all day long on my Google Nest (indoor) cameras.

That's the problem.

Hi there,

Unfortunately, the creation of clips is a Nest app feature and isn't currently available for all cameras in the Google Home app. Sorry for the inconvenience, but please feel free to share your feedback with us in the app.

Best regards,

Brad

This answer will help tremendously when someone comes to murderize me and my family can't copy the evidence!

This tells me that I can't use Google products for home security on the new house we are building. Got it.

Yeah. Google Home is pretty lame in this way. I wanted to save a clip of some shady characters on my video so I could provide it to the police, if necessary. Sadly, that is not an option with my outdoor cameras. WTF Google?

That is how I found out that there is a difference.  Someone spent 8 minutes trying to steal my golf cart.  The camera flagged 3 minutes of the total time as an "event".  A great view of the person's face was in the last two minutes which was not part of the "event" so I was not able to send that to the authorities.  Google support suggested that I play the video on my phone and use screen capture software to capture the time that is outside of the event.  So indeed.... WTF Google???

@JohnnyG56

These are the Nest Community Forums, not an application like the Google Home app, for example. You will want to leave your feedback in the app, or by following the link I sent previously. Thank you for your patience.

Best regards,

Brad

Are you saying that google does not monitor the community to see how its users feel about their products and services?

I reached out to the Google online chat support in trying to submit this preoccupation. Well, early this morning, I was channeled through three agents which couldn't help me in submitting my complaint. I was finally given a phone number for me to call. I have yet to find to courage to call them.

The clients who find that this lack in the Google Home application, should also submit their complaints to the Google complaints depertment.

Their phone number is +1-855-469-6378

Thanks for the phone number, gilleslibre. I called them and was able to achieve my goal of downloading a clip from an external (Google Home) camera using the app. Here's how we did it:

On the Google Home app,

  1. Select the camera in question

  2. Choose History

  3. Choose Full History

  4. Choose the video you want to download

  5. Choose Event Details

  6. Notice the tiny little, un-obvious download link at the top of the screen and click it to download that clip to your phone.

Google tells me that this capability will show up in the Home website (home.google.com) eventually. Until then, this is how you can download a clip from your external cameras. HTH!

The issue is not that I can't download the event, it is that I can't download a few minutes before and after the event.

When they were trying to steal my golf cart, the camera only flagged a few minutes of the entire event.  So, there was activity that I was not able to download.

Yes, thank you for the precise and detailed information. However, my difficulty with the clips that you can download, is that you can't choose clips tailored by yourself. You are constrained by the clips produced by Google Home, which doesn't capture all that is necessary and for the time that is required. This is a major flaw.
