Turned off IPv6 and magic!

Hyperion07

After almost 6 months of my Nest thermostat and Nest Hello doorbell not connecting to my Google Nest or Home apps I have finally cracked the code!

I’m in the UK using a full fibre Community Fibre 3GBps connection. On a desperate hunch, I turned off IPv6 in the admin settings of my Technicolor router and both devices reconnected instantly, I can’t believe it was so simple. No amount of splitting WiFi bands, long phone calls with Community Fibre, or poring through Google forums, or following Google reset instructions on repeat cracked this. Sharing so someone else somewhere doesn’t have to go through this headache just to have a working doorbell and thermostat! Ryan x

Hi Ryan,

Thank you for posting such valuable information in the community. I'm glad that reconnecting your Nest Thermostat and Nest Hello Doorbell was as simple as turning off IPv6 in your router's admin settings. Please let me know if I can help you with anything else.

Best regards,

Jenny.

@tajennifer

Why should we have to turn off IPV6 though? That impacts every other device we might have it seems crazy to have to do this to suit a single device.

Hi Super_paulie,

Thanks for your questions! I understand that it seems a bit crazy, all the Google Nest devices (2nd Gen) are compatible with IPv6 but for IPv6 to work, all of these entities must support it:

  • Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) (must also support IPv4; we don’t support IPv6-only connections)
  • The operating system and applications running on your client devices

You can check the IPv6 article if you want to check the details. Please let me know if you have more questions.

Regards,

Jenny
