Useless expensive bell without subscription

YannP
Community Member

The Bell is an expensive device. What you might not know when you buy it is that you also need to spend $9/mth or $90/yr on a subscription to access fundamental features like recordings, ring tones selection and also face recognition…! google gets you by making these features available for a couple of mths then switch off the features. It took me a couple of weeks to realise that.

i also pay for GoogleOne and Google Storage. It should be covered by this. And some of the features should just be available by default.
not acceptable, Google, and would recommend alternative cheaper products with no subscription

This is part of the late-stage-capitalism dystopia where you need a subscription to make your doorbell work properly. Have you read 'Unauthorised Bread' by Cory Doctorow?
I accept that storing video in the cloud for longer periods should require a subscription, but deleting video off the device after just 3 hours is pure greed. There's enough local storage to keep days worth of video, maybe even weeks or months for some users. They are intentionally hamstringing a device to force one of the most expensive subscriptions for a doorbell.

I take your point entirely. If you're already paying for data storage online. Why not let it be part of that bucket?? The subscription is near impossible to justify if it's just a doorbell.. a very expensive one at that.

If you could make these extra features part of the product de facto rather than options to pay for, that’d be great. Thank you.

Hey YannP,

Thanks for getting back to us. We appreciate your interest however, we don't have any news to share about applying these extra features to the Nest devices. We're always looking for ways to improve and we'll take it as feedback. I'd suggest you send feedback about your concern using this form to let the Google Engineering team know about your concern. While they won't respond directly back to you, this is the best way to let them know about this. Please let me know if you have other questions or concerns as I will be locking this after 24 hours. Feel free to start a new thread and we'll be happy to help.

Thanks,

Emerson
