Wasps at cameras

NestUser21550

I have had two outdoor Nest cameras setup and lately I have almost constant crawling or flying across the lenses by wasps. I am getting multiple notifications of activity because of the wasps (several have even been notices of ‘person’!). Wondering if the cameras emit a noise or frequency that attracts insects. No comments from others experiencing same issue so this may just be my problem…..

IR(Infrared) light used by the camera for the night vision is visible to insect, so it may attract bugs at night time. Although motion detection is pretty smart these days, size of the object is one of the factor when identifying the object. So if the bug flies close to the lenses, it may be identified as camera. People who wished to minimise these issues, usually disable IR light of the camera and install standalone IR Lights in different location. However, i am not sure nest camera allows you to disable IR Light.

Hi Summoner,  I have had IR cams for years  and never noticed bugs being attracted to the IR LEDs.    Is it possible you are thinking of Ultraviolet light?   Isn't that why bug lamps are always Purple (Violet) in color?

Try googling "Infrared bug". Unfortunately, its a common issue affecting a lot of security cam owners. I have the same issue at night time.

Hello again, you are correct.  I just googled it and see all the info about it.  But still I almost never see any bugs fly in front of my cams and if I do they never stay more than a few seconds.   Like everything on the internet it seems you can always find different answers all over the place.  I did find this one however...  " There appears to be little research on the subject but at least some sources agree that UV attracts many insects (that's why it is used in bug zappers). There is also some evidence that beetles, mosquitos and bedbugs are attracted to IR light, likely more due to the heat aspect than the light itself.Feb 14, 2014"

But for sure you are having an issue and I'm not sure how you can fix it.

I gave up trying to fix the issue, as i could not find solution online, and did not want to spend more money to hire professional. I just accepted that bugs (mostly moths and spiders for me) are attracted to my cams. So, i check notification only few times a day, and when i see bugs in the notification, i just ignore them.

Hope someone with more knowledge about this provides a comment as well, as i am also interested in solving the issue.

Hey folks,

Sorry for my late response. Thank you for all of your patience while waiting for a reply. I just wanted to make sure that your issue is addressed. I am terribly sorry to hear that you have ran into this issue with bugs sending you multiple notifications. I can imagine that this has been quite frustrating and annoying with all the alerts going off. Afraid there isn't an alert setting for insects, but as for this specific issue, I am afraid I am at a loss as to what can be done for this issue. I will however, take this feedback and report it forward.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Best Regards,

Brad.
