Why is the night vision camera so bad on the Google nest camera compared to the gen 1 doorbell cam?

I’ve had the nest battery camera installed for years now and I just recently did a test and put  the nest battery camera facing the same direction as the nest gen 1 wired doorbell. Can someone explain to me why the image is so poor in the nest camera compared to the older gen 1 doorbell in night vision?! I have screenshot to prove it

Hi @Apiedi,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand you'd like to know why the night vision image from your Nest Doorbell seems to be better than the night vision image of your Nest Cam (battery). This is definitely not the experience we want for you, especially when you have a 2nd Gen Nest Camera, compared with your Nest Doorbell (1st Gen). I'm happy to assist you.

Even though you mentioned both cameras are facing the same direction, night vision video quality can be affected by internet speed and other issues. However, most night vision-specific issues are caused by the camera’s infrared light reflecting off a nearby surface, such as a shelf, window, window screen, or wall.

Below, you'll find steps to determine if the issue can be fixed, with the expectation of seeing improvements in your Nest Cam (battery) night vision:

  • Clean the lens with a soft cloth that’s made to clean optics. Dust, thumbprints, and dirt can cause poor image quality.
  • Turn the camera so that any nearby surfaces or objects (like a wall) are out of view.
  • Use the Nest or Google Home app to Zoom and Enhance and crop out surfaces or objects that may be the cause of the glare.
  • If a bright white shape along the edge appears while everything else is too dark, there might be a surface that’s too close to the camera’s view (like a wall). Angle the camera so the surface stays out of view.
  • Move nearby objects that may reflect the infrared light.

I hope this information addresses your concern.

Regards,

Anders
