After motion detection, the camera needs up to a second to light the green led. But even events of about 2 seconds shows up in "history" as "stream problem". You need to put the cursor at its exact time to see that message, as the event is not even marked on the history line. Longer events show up normally, so this camera simply needs about 2 seconds to wake up and start streaming.
In other words, if you do not want to be detected, it is enough to run in front of a Nest cam fast enough.
Then there are other problems, like push notifications show for about 5% of events.

We have had the Google Nest Camera (Battery) for 13 months, plugged in with the optional power cable, along with a Nest Aware Plus subscription. It is always "Live" and captures events as well as our older wired Google Nest cameras and doorbells. If we unplug the camera so it is running on battery power, it runs in "Idle" mode and may not detect and record when we walk directly in front of the camera, and is always slow to detect events. Other customers in this forum also report that, when on battery power, the camera is slow to wake up and detect and start recording an event, and may not detect some events.

Thanks for this helpful information, MplsCustomer. Do you know perhaps if it is normal that only few events are accompanied by push notifications? If yes, what is the logic behind that choice? Or should every single event be accompanied by a notification if enabled in settings?

You should get notifications for each event if it's enabled in your Settings. However, the camera has to detect the event.
In addition, there is a "cooldown" period, during which cameras will not send additional notifications; see this thread:

Hi everyone,
@Uthinu I appreciate you posting here in the community. Because Google Nest attempts to send the customer the right number of alerts at the right times, the camera will trigger a short cooldown period each time a notification is sent. While the duration of the cooldown period varies by alert type (person, sound, motion, etc.) the behavior remains the same.
Nest strives to give our customers only the most important information, when it’s important. Because of that, the length of the cooldown period fluctuates according to our research on what our customers find useful and important. Let me know if you have any additional questions from here.
Thanks for the response @MplsCustomer.
Regards,
Emerson
