What I want is that when I cast to Chromecast, the sound goes through HK Citation Oasis. I'm having trouble making this work. I have a feeling it should though.
So in Google Home there's a HOME > ROOM > 2 devices: HK Citation Oasis w. GA & Chromecast Ultra.. (not saying anything about the speaker groups yet)
- When I'm casting from Chrome on Macbook I have an option - to cast it to Chromecast, but then the sound for this cast goes through Chromecast (and this is 2w projector speaker) OR to cast the sound through KH Citation Oasis, no video cast in this cace. Not able to do both - one cast switches off the other one. (same goes for the speaker group - simply one of the options of audio cast)
- When I'm casting video from iOS I am able to choose Chromecast, not able to choose sound cast to Google devices separately. I'm even able to add cast to Airplay at the same time (HK Citation Oasis supports that), but there's no sound, probably since the video&audio are already casted to Chromecast..
I read it should be possible to make Google Speaker the default speaker for Chromecast.. BUT I don't see this options in the Audio settings of Chromecast. Only the option to create/choose speaker group, Group delay correction and Surround sound mode,
IS IT AT ALL POSSIBLE? SHOULD BE..

You can't do what you want the way you want to do it.
When you cast, that tells the service (Netflix, Spotify, Google Movies, whatever) to push the stream directly to the Chromecast device. Your computer and your phone don't actually handle the data. They just get updates. That's why you can sometimes turn off your phone or computer and the casting continues.
You can't tell Netflix etc to split the stream and push the audio to another device.
There is ONE workaround... the new Chromecast with Google TV (the oblong unit that comes with a remote) can push audio to a Bluetooth speaker. No other Chromecast devices can do that.

I asked this question on Chromecast thread first, so here's the link to it:

Hi Kirill_
Thanks for reaching out. It appears that you have another thread with this same issue. I'll merge this to that thread. I suggest that you follow the main thread for updates because this thread will be locked automatically once merged in the main one.
Thanks,
Juni

Thank you, @Byteguy this is how I thought it worked.. Thanks for the Bluetooth workaround, but as I wrote I have Chromecast Ultra.
It's just surprises me that a Google Chromecast can't cast sound to a Google speaker via Wifi. This basically means you can't use Google viewing device with Google sound device to watch a video with sound.. Sounds crazy..

..you also can't just add the GA speaker or a speaker group in the Google Home app to play the sound too, when casting Youtube or Netflix to Chromecast, it just disappears..
It is there when casting sound though.. 😑🌴
I was also hoping it might work this way if you start Netflix from the GA speaker (like "play .. on Netflix"), but there's an authentification error when joining Netflix to Google Home app.. People wrote about it too, and I'm dealing with both Supports - Netflix and Google, they both say the bug is on the other side..
Oh my Google.. what a mess

Music is different that video.
You are right, you can make groups for Music and cast to all of the devices in a group at the same time.
But video doesn't support groups at all. You can only cast video to one device at a time.

Hello, Jeran!
Just an UPD - after Google Home App last update fixed the Netflix<>GA connection, so this works fine now. But it still works the same way as Byteguy wrote above, sound for it is still casting through Chromecast HDMI only..
I mean isn't this crazy?
12-08-2022 08:26 AM
Hey there Kirill_,
I apologize for the late response, thank you for being patient! I'm glad to hear that the Netflix issue was fixed. As for the sound coming through Chromecast HDMI only, that is working as intended. At the moment, there isn't a way to split the audio and video while casting to two separate devices. I've seen some demand for this functionality in the past, so if this is a feature you'd like to see in the future, I'd highly encourage you to submit feedback to Google.
I hope that helps, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!
Best regards,
Jeran

Hello,
I'm curious to why it is possible to add a chromecast to an audio group if that doesn't work ?

Hey there LiamThys,
Chromecast devices do work as a part of a speaker group, for sound. However, you aren't able to split the audio and the video while casting, so their functionality while part of a speaker group is limited to only playing audio. Go ahead and check out this article for more information.
Best regards,
Jeran

It's clear there's no simple solution to this, so yes it can be closed I think.
Thank you
