Cannot link Chromecast to Google Home via LG TV

P1
Community Member

I have a Chromecast device connected to LG TV (I do not think the TV is compatible, but have managed to stream from Android phone to TV via Chromecast).

I cannot link the chromecast device to my Google Home.

I cannot find Chromecast in the listed services either.

I am trying to view Tapo security cameras, via Google Home/Chromecast, on my LG TV.

Resources read online claim this should be possible. Google support forums say it is possible, and Tapo support forums say it is possible... I cannot add the chromecast device to my Google Home, nor find the correct Google Assistant settings to set it up.

Hey there,

I'm sorry about the late response, thank you for being patient! Were you able to fix that linking issue? If not, I'd be happy to help out, let me just ask you some questions about what's happening:

  • Do your devices meet the Chromecast requirements?

  • Is your Google Home app up-to-date?

  • Is your Chromecast and TV's firmware both up-to-date?

  • What troubleshooting steps have you already tried?

In the meantime, I would recommend you check out this article on common Chromecast connection issues, it has some good steps to follow for your particular case.

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,

Jeran

Thabks for the follow up. I had actually forgot to respond, having been busy with other things.

I have not been able to link my chromecast to my Google home.

LG TV may not be compatible with chromecast, but forums claim I should be able to link the chromecast device to my Google home.

I have cast from android phone to LG tv via a chromecast app previously.

I am trying to set it up so that I can cast from my Google home device to the LG TV.

Reading done gives the impression this should be possible, but Google home cannot locate the chromecast service or the device.

My chromecast device plugs into hdmi3 port on back of LG tv.

I have tried running through TV set up on Google home, but no options found.

Lg TV has limited functions on, and is already connected to, my Google Home.

I am out of ideas.

Chromecast no better than cheap smart watches.

I will not be paying for a service on a device that does not work as I require. Not even for testing.

In short, I have paid £40 for a device that does nothing but recommend pointless apps. Even the app which enables casting from phone does not work well.

Thabks again for the follow up reply, and your time.

I'm sorry to hear that your Chromecast is giving you so much trouble, let's see if we can figure out what's happening, first let's make sure everything checks out for the Chromecast requirements:

  • Chromecast is powered on and plugged into a wall outlet.
  • The LED light on the side of the Chromecast device is white.
  • If you're setting up from a supported iOS or Android device, make sure you're using the most recent version of the Google Home app.
  • The Chromecast device is within 15 - 20 ft of the mobile device or tablet you're using to set it up.
  • Has the Chromecast device been connected to this network before?
    • Were there any recent changes to your network?

Since you are also using an Android device, make sure that Location Services are enabled. Also, if you are using a dual-band router, make sure the setup device and the Chromecast are on the same network band, either 2.4GHz or 5GHz.

Let me know if that works out, I look forward to your response!

Thank you,

Jeran

ChCa is plugged into wall, the light is white.

The Google Home app is up to date, and the device is connected to network.

I am unsure if it has been connected to WiFi, and do not know how to connect it. I assumed that it connects via the TV.

Yes, there has been network changes. I have initiated ISP investigations due to service drop-outs. Since buying the ChCa device, I have had a new router sent, and the channel which the router uses has been changed to a specific channel as part of diagnosis/testing (to avoid bandwidth congestion).

To add... The TV has been successfully updated to the new network (WiFi details too, though the TV used a wired connection).

I think this may be a distraction to the issue I'm facing though.

I cannot connect the chromecast to my Google Home. Chromecast does not appear in the list of services, and when scanning for devices, the chromecast does not show.

I am still able to cast from android phone to TV via the Chromecast using a casting app.

I would like to cast from Google home device to TV.  Is this even possible?

Just to add...

I do not want to enable location on devices except for limited times when actually needed. I am aware that Google sells data to CCP, and I am not happy about that. I have privacy concerns which Google does not seem to consider. I have removed Google Nest app, as that too seems to serve no wanted function. I only added it as part of trying to add Chromecast to my Google Home device.

As I cannot get Chromecast to add to my Google Home device, I do not see a need for the Google Nest app (which demands consent for too much).

I bought the chromecast device to cast from my phone, and to cast from Google Home device, to my TV.  I can perform one of these functions without any decent quality (display scaling, lag, definition).

It would be nice to ask my Google Home device to play a song on YouTube and cast to TV.

My TV already has YouTube installed, but no voice command function (Google controls for LG TV are very limited - 'on' and 'off' is about it).

Hey there P1,

Would you be willing to give these steps a try?

  • Go ahead and perform a Factory Reset on the Chromecast
  • Make sure the Chromecast is connected to the same network band (either 2.4GHz or 5Ghz) as the Google Home device, and it can be detected inside the Google Home app.
  • Try linking the Chromecast device in the Google Home device again.

Let me know what happens when you give that a try!

Best regards,

Jeran

Thanks for the reminder.

Unfortunately, I am currently decorating (which, due to complications, has taken a lot longer than expected).

A long explanation cut short, my devices are all currently disconnected. I am aiming to complete the work in about 2 weeks, at which point, I will attempt the reset steps suggested, and post back here to update you.

Thanks again for the reminder/time.  The Chromecast thing is a stress, but the decorating couldn't wait due to other commitments.

No problem at all! I'm really sorry that the Chromecast is being so troublesome, take all the time you need, and I'll check back in a couple of weeks.

If you lock it, can I still read it?

I have not had chance to try the posted steps yet, as have been decorating. This work has been delayed/extended, and am still not quite finished yet (roughly 4more days left).

I am also waiting on a new carpet, which will not arrive until 2nd week of January. It will be after that installation that I look to set up my digital devices again.

I would still like to try the suggested steps, but have not had opportunity to try resolving the issue yet.

Hey there!

If we locked the thread, you'd still have access to read the conversation. However,  I can leave this thread open until January. We only lock up the threads that are either resolved, or have no activity, so no worries!

Hi Jean, thanks for the reply.

I am still waiting on carpet fitters. They seem to have delayed installation by a month. My painting is done, but need to keep the room empty until the carpet is fitted.

Unfortunately, I have still not had opportunity to try the suggested steps. Growing impatient with these corporations failing to keep to the dates they agree.

First had issues and delays with B&Q, a long wait with DFS (which doesn't prevent me unpacking), and now SCS dragging their feet (who I am still waiting on)...

To these people, months seem to be no be big deal.

I will be unable to set my tv/devices up until after the carpet installation, which is now expected to be around mid February (based on excuses provided by SCS). Carpets were supposed to be fitted this week.

Sorry for the delays on this.

I hope you are doing well!

Hi Jeran,

Thanks for your patience on this.

Long story short:

It is probably best to lock this thread. Maybe I could seek assistance again when I am actually able to perform the steps suggested?

The long story:

Incredibly, I have still not had opportunity to get to testing the steps out.  Most of my stuff is still packed up, having been messed about by DFS, SCS, and B&Q consecutively. The delays inflicted have dissuaded me from unpacking my stuff and dlfunishing my flat properly.

This means, I have not unpacked the device that I have been waiting to attempt reinstallation of. I cannot give a reliable date when these steps can be attempted at this point. The outstanding delay by DFS tells me 'end of May', but considering the 4month delays when the date finally arrives, who knows. After delivery, will need a few weeks to unpack/furnish (it would be during that device installation that I would attempt to get the chromecast working correctly).

Again, thank you for you patience/understanding. These delays were unforeseen, and balances are paid.

This is all due to corporates inflicting on me through their own malice or incompetence. The inflicted delays have a broad scope of consequential complications, this chromecast diag obfuscation is comparatively minor.

I digress. Thanks for the time, and sorry for seemingly wasting your time. I will attempt the steps provided if still able to view, at the earliest possible time.

All the best,

P1
