Cannot pick power for remote

Towt

I am trying to move my chromecast to a new TV. Volume setup and input setup work as expected. Power, takes a moment, and then it says "Unable to reach Google servers". Is a server down?

Steps I've tried:

* Connected to a different network

* Connected to a cellular hotspot

* Factory reset my chromecast

Again, volume and input work just fine, only power has issues.

Hi @Towt

That is a strange issue.
And how about not having it connected to any kind of internet?

Does the assistant button also work?

@RXShorty Assistant button works fine. I haven't tried being offline. Doesn't it NEED to be online?

I just tried being offline and it says the same thing (though a lot faster because I turned the wifi off)

Thanks for trying @Towt

Yes it should have internet to use all streaming services just wanted to try it without internet.

Could you check if your remote needs a update, there is also a mayor update to android 12 for the Google TV chromecast.
This can be found at Settings > Remotes & Accessories.

Remote says it's up to date. Chromecast is up to date

I am getting the same "Unable to reach Google servers" error today, when I hit Add device.

First shows "What's the brand of your [TV, sound bar, AV receiver]?", with the loading indicator on the right. List of brands never load, then after 5 sec the error message.

I have also tried the same steps as @Towt , and both Chromecast and Remote are up to date.

Hey there ogsv,

I'm sorry to hear you were experiencing this as well. Were you able to give Towt's work-around a try, or are you still experiencing the issue?

Best regards,

Jeran

Hi Jeran,

I am still having this issue, and the workaround mentioned does not work for me, as I get the error one step earlier than Towt - I am not able to add any device.

Would be interesting to see the network traffic when this happens...

I too am getting the "Unable to reach Google severs" error.  Volume worked great, but now I cannot setup power or input.

I did find a workaround. Not the cleanest. But I added another device (Toshiba TV in this case). When I picked power, it worked fine, but when I tried volume, the problem seems to have moved. Now I have Toshiba and Toshiba (1). Toshiba has Volume and Input and Toshiba (1) has Power. I set everything so that it works the way that it's expected. But something is up.

Hey there Towt,

I'm just checking up on this thread, I'm glad you were able to figure out a work-around! This is a pretty strange issue, and I haven't personally seen it before. In the meantime, do you have any more questions or need any additional help?

Thank you for helping out on this thread, RXShorty!

Best regards,
Jeran

Update: I just took my Chromecast along to a friend's place, and it worked! I was immediately able to configure the remote buttons for my Samsung TV.

Either some very few IP ranges are actually being blocked by Google servers, or someone fixed the problem overnight.

Hey there ogsv,

I'm glad to hear you got it to work! I'm not too sure what the root cause was, but it's good that it worked out. In that case, do you have any more questions or need any additional help?

Thank you,
Jeran

No further assistance required, but I do need to get to the root cause at some point 😅

Hiya ogsv,

Totally understandable! If, for some reason, the problem occurs again in the future, would you be able to submit feedback via Google TV? That way, if there are any error logs generated, it would send them directly to the Google Engineering team. No obligation, of course, but it would be helpful!

Best regards,

Jeran
