Casting image shows menu

I had an old Chromecast where I could cast a picture of someone at the door from Home Automation onto the TV. Very useful. Have upgraded to a new Chromecast TV and this only works sometimes. Often I get the menu to choose what to watch (as if just turned on) rather than the image I have cast. Sometimes I do get the cast image. I can't work out the logic, or what I need to do to always cast the image. Welcome any advice. Thanks

Hey there rydens,

I am sorry about the late response, thank you for being patient on this! Were you able to fix that casting issue? If not, I'd be happy to help out, as I know connection issues between 3rd-party devices can be difficult to troubleshoot. Let me just ask you some questions about what's happening:

  • What model of device are you using from Home Automation?
  • Is your Chromecast firmware up-to-date?
  • Is your Google Home app up-to-date?
  • Are all the devices involved connected to the same network band? Either 2.4GHz or 5GHz
  • What troubleshooting steps have you already tried?

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

Hi, thanks for your response.
Home automation is running on a Pi3 and connected via an Ethernet cable to my network.
Chromecast firmware is 1.56.276477 I can see no way to update it
It is connected wirelessly yo my home network. Both 2.4 and 5 have the same SSID and password
Google home runs on my Android and Chromebook - on Android it is version 2.48.75.6

If I cast several times in succession it appears to work, but if it has been off for a while it sometimes casts the menu instead of the image. I guessed the chromecast was going to sleep so to try to overcome this I have added a media_player.turn_on command in HA before I cast the image, but this doesn't seem to fix the problem.

There must be some logic as to why it doesn't always work, but to date this eludes me. Welcome your suggestions.

Cheers David

Hi rydens,

Thanks for visiting the Community.

Since this thread hasn't had activity in a while, we're going to close it to keep content fresh.

If you're still having trouble casting to your Chromecast , please give these steps a try:

Reboot the devices.
Reboot your router

Make sure your devices are connected to the same network and within 15-20 feet of your router.

If the issue persists, feel free to submit another post and provide as many details as possible so that others can lend a hand. Hope this helps!

Best,
Alex
