It is lucky for me to find this thread too. I kept on trying to connect my Chromecast 2 to 5GHz network but only work for 2.4GHz after update. Will try to see if my router can set to a lower band.....😥

Which channel do you use on 2.5GHz?

36

My problem with latest Chromecast Audio firmware is worse (1.56.281627). It not only does not detect and connect to a 5GHz network, it does not connect to 2.4GHz either. When I am able to connect it to the 2.4GHz (Continuously reset of the device), it will disconnect from the network soon (after a minute or at maximum least a day). I really hope Google is looking into this because I use Chromecast Audio often. That small magic thing is perfect for me, well it was until the new firmware broke it! I only have one doubt and probably some of you may help, may a Mesh Network (I have the Modem plus two Mesh Extender) affect the connection? It is a Mesh so the band, channels, password, id, etc. is the same through the house. Please help.

I would be surprised if a mesh network may affect. Please help.

My situation with Chromecast Audio with latest firmware pushed is worse (1.56.281627). It does not connect to the 5GHz neither to the 2.4GHz. If I reset the device and install it, after several tentative I am able to connect it to the 2.4GHz. However it will disconnect soon or within the day and I have to reset it again and start all over again. I hope Google is looking to have a fix to this firmware soon.

Lowering the channel number is not viable. While I can it drastically reduces the range and stability of the 5ghz network. 2.4g is not a viable solution either given its performance is not to stream without issue
Very frustrating as I never signed up to a beta program yet my firmware is ahead of the stable release.

successfully achieve the goal. And no one is responsible for it and no plans to fix it

I have firmware version 1.56.275994. It was working fine till last 1 or 2 months with 5 GHz band. One fine day, it stopped working and was not detecting the 5GHz RF SSIDs. I have tried manually entering the 5GHz SSID, but the dongle refuse to connect to 5 GHz band.
Currently, the dongle is working fine with 2.4 GHz but with some problems when I play FHD fast motion movies.
Let me know the solution for this once Google resolves this. Of course, everyone is waiting for this ...please share in this forum.

Just to share... I have set the channel to 36 and the chromecast dongle is able to detect 5GHz SSID and could connect to 5GHz band. Currently, my dongle is on 5GHz and there is no problem in seeing FHD at 60Hz

My my Chromecasts worked well on 2.5 Ghz band until Optus did some upgrades and now, I cannot connect one and the other one drops in an out. Very frustrating. It feels like the technology is very out of date.
01-17-2022 01:37 AM
What channel are you using on 2.5GHz? I get a constant message saying the dongle won’t connect to Wi-Fi and please make sure I’m on the same wifi as the TV.
01-19-2022 12:58 AM
When I was using 2.4GHz band, I have set the router to "Auto" channel mode. It worked without any problem.
Currently, I could set-up the dongle to 5GHz by setting the channel to 36.
For me, as of now, the problem is solved (for 5GHz band)

Hi Guys,
Needless to say I am here after almost two months of frustration and complaints to google. Also, I logged a call with them, and the customer care guy told me, that this problem is a known issue and Google is trying to push an update soon (there is no way to roll back the current update). This was one month ago. Nothing as of yet.
Now, going through the chats above, I can see that some of you could change the channel of 5Ghz router and connect. Following your lead, I have tried all channels available on my router (36 to 48), but sadly Chromecast still doesn't connect on any of therm. Can someone send me details of their router connection (5Ghz) on which the chromecast is connecting properly.
After almost 5 years of Chromecast-2 usage, thoroughly disappointed in Google and thinking of switching to Xiaomi.
01-26-2022 03:54 PM
HI
While yes you can change the channel ( if your router supports it) this for me lowers significantly the range and speed of my 5Ghz wifi network. So while it "works" it is not a viable solution.
I can get the Chromecasts (gen3) to connect when setting to channel 44.
My router actually warns me i will lose performance...it wasn't kidding. If I go more than 10 meters from the router it gets very patchy and slow so be aware.

Is there a way to change the 5Ghz channel on a tablet? Got a Chromecast 3 for Christmas and after many attempts got it to connect to a tablet sharing a 300 Mbps 4G connection via the 5Ghz option. Worked fine until today. After many attempts got it working again. Would like to have a workaround if the faulty firmware problem arises.
02-02-2022 01:02 PM
I also can't lower the range, I have 5 chromecasts audio in different rooms and some are at the border of my wifi. Seeing them bricked is so disappointing. A good product used for many years it's been killed. I guess the reason is that we can't click ads on audio. But if the solution is to kill chromecast, the same will happen for youtube music. bad decision imo
02-07-2022 04:34 PM
I fixed it by removing all Chromecasts and replacing them with Apple TV. Google lost this race for me. I'm not even considering any Google hardware in the future.
02-08-2022 12:54 AM
I am too cannot connect to 5G network. Only 2.4G. Please help to resolve this asap
03-27-2022 01:26 PM
Hold on… this is now a MONTHS OLD issue and Google is still not fixing this!? In our case we cannot select a “lower channel” because the Wi-Fi is actually a 5g mobile hotspot. So everything else in the house, Apple TV 4K, Amazon Firestick, even our old Apple TV 3 from 2012! Can connect over 5ghz, but my new Google Tv CANNOT?!! This now actually needs a fix, not a workaround anymore. I suggest the engineering team start rolling back to pre December firmware in their next update.. that should be the priority right now. You’ll genuinely stifle current customer base and new sales. I know I’ll have to ditch it if it isn’t fixed very soon, and I’m sure I’m not the only one..
04-16-2022 06:42 AM
I'm done with Google. I finally just bought some firestick 4ks which work like a champ. I was thinking about buying a Pixel, but zero chance of that now. Between this and the G-Suite fiasco, Google is in my "do not buy from this vendor" list, both at work and at home.

It seems that the Manufacturing Date on my ChromeCast 3 is April 2021.And it happens to fail 20 April 2022, exactly 1 year warranty expires.

Just encountered this issue since yday and it’s amazing that the thread above hasn’t helped resolve this for 5 months. Exploring what to replace the chrome cast 2 with. From above it seems that the problem exists with chrome cast 3rd gen also - so that’s disappointing.

I found disabling auto channel select (on the vodafone Technicolor wifi modem) allowed my chromecast to see both my 2.4G and 5G beacons, where before it found neither. I tried lots of things including replacing the Chromecast with a new one (same model).
05-04-2022 12:42 AM
I also recently came across the problem when Chromecast won't connect to 5Ghz Wifi and it is because Chromecast software doesn't support upper 5 Ghz channels. That is some BULLS..T
05-05-2022 09:23 AM
I'm getting same error with my Chromecastand google mini, is not recognizing 5Ghz wifi already tried changing channeland notworking,
sometimes when I reset the device the 5Ghz connections shows up but never connects due to showing connection error then it disappears,I don't have this issue with other Devices.

does anyone know what is the latest firmware version on Chromecast and if this issue is fixed? i have 2 devices at home that can only work on 5Ghz upper channel (149 and above) and only Chromecast that can only work on 5GHz lower channel. so now i have to pick either side and I pick the 5Ghz upper channel since it's 2 vs 1, so my chromecast does not work now.
how do I check the latest firmware on Chromecast?
This link doesn't necessarily give the latest info since my Chromecast has a later firmware (275994) than stated in this website (250946)
05-14-2022 05:53 AM
The latest firmware version is the one that's on your chromecast. You can check the firmware level by going to the device information for it on the google home app. The firmware is pushed and the average user doesn't have the option to refuse it. A technical user may be able to Pi hole it.

Why u doing us dirty Google 😭😭😭 everything worked fine until I took my Chromecast to a friend's place and when I brought it home it wouldn't connect again 😭 my 5ghz band won't let me change the channel to anything other than 'auto' what do I do???
07-25-2022 06:11 AM
GUYS I CALLED GOOGLE... And all I needed to do was try setting it up with a different device. Problem = solved!
08-06-2022 10:59 AM
I've just brought a "previously owned" gen 3 CC. I can connect it to my 5ghz wifi but, when I cast, the device resets after a short while, especially if I try to pause or advance the stream to a later point. The device has firmware 291998. The router is using ch36 for 5ghz.
Other devices connect can use the 5ghz wifi no problem, and the cc works OK on 2.4ghz except that the resolution can be a bit iffy.
Is this the same issue as everyone else on this thread, or some different?
10-01-2022 06:56 PM
Hi everybody, I have the same issue with a 2nd gen Chromecast. I even bought a new Nest Wifi 3pack and the entire house is now blanketed in 5 bar AC wireless coverage.
But does not matter, if I have a visitor over to my house (clearly Google hasn't thought of this problem) and I enable Guest network on my Nest Wifi -- or AP isolation it turns out -- I look again and I'm back to 2.4ghz wireless on the Chromecast and the quality is junk on ole wireless 802n.
The only way once I've even turned on guest network once is to hard reset the whole network, infuriating!

Hi folks,
Sorry for the late reply. I’m sorry for the trouble this has caused everyone, let me help you out.
A few things: Which Chromecast device you have? What device is used to complete setup? Can you find the network name on the set up device? Which country are you contacting us from? Lastly, who is your internet service provider?
We also advise to change the channel of the 5 Ghz to less than 100. Otherś tried this and worked for them. Letś also make sure that the distance from your router is at least within 15 feet as 5 Ghz frequency. The range is lower in the 5 GHz band (10–15 ft) because higher frequencies cannot penetrate solid objects, such as walls and floors.
Keep me posted.
Best,
Juni

Hi everyone,
It's been some time since this thread was updated. Does anyone here need assistance?
Cheers,
Muddi
11-08-2022 11:37 PM
Hi Muddi. Well, yeah, as per my post from 6th August above. I've been using 2.4GHz since then and mostly works ok albeit with the odd crash. I've not tried 5GHz again as it was so unstable.
11-09-2022 08:48 PM
what is the latest firmware version for Chromecast 2? Does it fix the issue where it can not connect to the upper band of 5GHz channel? Thanks.
11-10-2022 02:44 AM
I also face the same problem. I have upgraded my wifi to wifi6. I tries both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. The outcome is always the same, everything works smooth but the end error is that the chromecast cannot connect to my wifi and I should check my router settings.
I have 6 chromecasts having this problem and have been patiently waiting for more than a year now. I don't even recall how many factory resets I did. Muddi, please help.
11-10-2022 11:37 AM
It's the latest firmware that does it. nothing you can do since you can not roll back firmware, so trash it out...
11-10-2022 12:31 PM
What, you don't think it is Google's responsibility to fix their shoddy product? Seriously?
