Chromecast 2nd Gen no longer appearing on connected HDMI port

Hi all,

Thanks in advance for your assistance with this.

My 2nd Gen Chromecast has stopped working. There's power to the device, since there is a constant orange light. The reset button doesn't appear to be stuck, but a hard factory reset via the device is not working, since the orange light remains constant irrespective of how long I hold down the reset button. I'm getting a black screen on my TV on the correct HDMI channel, so there's no evidence that the Chromecast and TV are talking to one other. The device worked previously, but it was powered off for a couple of weeks whilst we've been on holiday.

Do you have any idea what might be going on, since I've followed a number of troubleshooting options, but unfortunately none are working?

I've got a new mobile phone, but I can't understand why this should impact the Chromecast interacting with the TV.

Many thanks,

Mike

Hi micrawshaw,

Thanks for reaching out and I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with your Chromecast (2nd gen). Could you please try to plug in the Chromecast into a different HDMI port on your TV? Also, try the additional steps listed below:

  1. Check if the power outlet or USB port is functional for other devices.
  2. Plug the device into a power outlet and verify that the power cord and power adapter have a secure connection.
  3. Try a different power cord than the one that came in the box with the Chromecast device.
  4. Reboot the TV. Do the steps below:
    a. Shut down the TV completely (power off and disconnect the power cord from the power outlet).
    b. Disconnect the Chromecast from the HDMI port. If the Chromecast is plugged into the power outlet, unplug it.
    c. Power on the TV and reconnect the power source to the Chromecast device. Don't attach the Chromecast into the TV HDMI port.
    d. Wait 30 seconds and plug the Chromecast device into the HDMI port on the TV.
    e. Change the TV input to the same HDMI input as the Chromecast.
  5. Try to plug in the Chromecast into a different TV screen if one is available.
  6. Do another factory reset on your Chromecast device.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,

Jennifer

Hiya Jennifer,

I really appreciate you trying to help me, but I’m afraid that nothing you have suggested is working. My Chromecast is permanently displaying a solid orange light no matter what I do. Even if I try a factory reset using the button on the side of the device, it’s still unshifting from the solid orange light. I suspect that my issue is terminal and that the device has given up the ghost unless you have any other ideas.

Thank you for your efforts in assisting me,

MIke

Hello there,

Thanks for trying the steps and I'm sorry to hear that the issue persists. We have yet to confirm the cause of the issue if it's hardware or software related. Replacing the device is the next step, however, since you have a Chromecast (2nd gen), it's possible that the device is already out of warranty. This may not be the answer you're looking for, but we appreciate all your efforts and understanding.

Feel free to let me know if you have other questions and concerns.

Thanks,

Jennifer
