Chromecast Set Up - Google Home

Miguelo20

Hi All,

I have a 1st Gen Chromecast that was not used pretty much since we bought it (we bought other devices that kept using). We decided to give it a try now, and this is what we are facing:

Cell Phone #1 (Android), was able to set it up, able to cast from it, created family group, invited other members, able to see the device on Google Home. No issues

Cell Phone #2 (iPhone), able to cast from it, able to see the device on Google Home. No issues

Cell Phone #3 (iPhone), able to cast from it, but unable to find it in Google Home. So we can cast from it just fine (YouTube, Netflix, etc), but the device is NOT showing on Google Home. Cell Phone #4 (another iPhone) has the same issue.
This is not that annoying since we can cats from all of the devices, but it would be great if every device can also find it in Home. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hello Miguelo20,

Thanks for reaching out and for providing detailed information about your issue. Let's sort this out.

Quick question: does the cellphone number 3 and 4 are owned by the family member you added in your family group? If yes, please make sure they are viewing the correct home where the Chromecast is set up. Check the steps below to see how you can switch between homes in the Google Home app:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. At the top, tap the name of the current home.
  3. Select a new home from the drop-down. If the drop-down icon doesn’t appear, it means they only have one home in the Google Home app.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,

Jennifer

Hi JenniferV,

On the phones with issues, we deleted all "Homes" (they were all actually tests that we did) and re started the process and they still cannot see the device, they can stream, but just not see it in Google Home. Weird. Actually, we moved the device to another house and the phones with issues were unable to set it up. So I will need to get there and set it up for them so they can at least stream

Hello Miguelo20,

Thanks for getting back to us and for providing additional information. If the devices were moved to another house with a different Wi-Fi network, please factory reset the Chromecast devices then set it up using the Google Home app. Please take note that Chromecast devices can only remember one Wi-Fi network at a time.

Best,

Jennifer

Hi JenniferV,

I tried to set it up from scratch on either of the phones not working previously and we had no luck. Only with the phones already working. The phones not able to find the device in Google Home or to set it up, can stream, just cannot find the device or set it up. I actually had to go to the place where the device will be permanently installed, 100 miles away to set it up. So they stream, just unable to set it up and see it in their Google Home.

Hi Miguelo20,

Thanks for the additional information. If they are able to stream or cast to the Chromecast device, it means that it is set up and connected to the Wi-Fi network, there's no need for them to set it up. Please refer to this support website article to see the information about switching between homes in the Google Home app. They might be in a different home in the Google Home app, that's why they can't see the Chromecast device.

Thanks,

Jennifer
