Chromecast w Google TV frame rate stutter

salputrid

This happens across all apps some more than others.

I am using the Google TV interface.

This was not an issue with the Chromecast 3rd gen when I cast from my iphone.

Hi folks,

I'm sorry for the late response. This has been forwarded to the team and they're looking into this. I'll loop back in once we have an update about this.

Best,

Jennifer

Simply go to settings then the first option from the top Display & Sound then you should have the resolution setting there (should be 2nd option from the top) go there and you would have options in Hz, and you match it to framerate so 24fps = 24 Hz

hope this helps, in my case, it works.

Issue is different frame rates between streaming device and apps.

So, good and bad news

Good is I got an update yesterday to SSTTE.220920.016.H1.9408256 (from SSTTE.220621.019.A2.9482754)

Bad, I watched some HBO and judder is still there and I got the feeling that UI is not smooth anymore.

.

I also noticed that after this update the main menu doesn't work as smooth as before. However, some movies on Netflix run smoothly all the time, while others don't. For example, Wednesday 4K HDR runs smoothly all the time and every episode, while 1899 4K HDR slows down/stutter regularly.

I think it also depends on what you watch, and how the movie was captured. Yesterday I was watching a movie on Netflix and didn't find a setting to have it 100% smooth.

Can confirm I'm having the same issue. Still no fix yet from Google?

Still no fix mate. I have bought Chromecast 'cause I love smooth video experience. I'm thinking about Apple TV now but it's about twice as expensive 😞

I can´t wait more time. I am going to buy another device, It´s impossible to see anything on this chromecast and I think that until android 13 we will not have any update from google. It's very slow and google... where is google??. Good luck guys.

Unfortunately. This is the fault of the device itself and its incorrect update. On three TV sets from 300 to 1000 Euro, movies on Netflix and HBO stutter every couple of seconds. I also tested with different Internet connection.

Same problem here. And since my tv doesnt do Dolby Vision @60hz, the CC resets itself to 1080p@60hz everytime I turn on the tv.. We're probably better off buying another product.

Does anyone have a device with the latest firmware that doesn't have these issues?

I can't work out if it's only affecting some devices, or if most people just tolerate the problem,

Same problem here with CGTVHD, worked perfectly fine before updating to android 12. I use my Playstation4 now and that work perfectly using 20X more power to do the job thought.

Waiting for an update, not the customer job to debug a device on its main feature : watching content properly.

I just stop to watch my movie on prime, not happy. Can not look a movie and see many many « freeze »

Wait since many month for a fix.

i think put this device in garbage and see for a new one from Apple or Nvidia....

this is the end, very frustrating

I bought an Apple TV a few weeks back to replace this, but my 10 year old daughter insisted I kept the Chromecast connected to the TV too, as she was used to the controls, and mainly watches animated stuff, where the judders aren’t so noticeable.

Tonight though, she was watching Deadly 60 with the ChromeCast, on BBC iPlayer, and not only was the picture juddering and dropping frames, it was also inserting completely black frames every so often, so we’d just see black flashes every few seconds, really made it unwatchable.

I switched over to Apple TV, and played the same episode, and it played perfectly. Feels like the problems with the CC are just getting progressively worse over time.

Seems that is the best option. I'm going to try the Xiaomi mi box S, it's much cheaper than Apple, on an outdated android but I didn't see any reported issues.

No HDR10+ nor DV on the Xiaomi. Also hear issues with 60fps?

shi...t. 😞

The black flashes on BBC iPlayer has been happening ever since I got the device in Oct/Nov but it only happens if you start the iPlayer app from the Chromecast interface. If you cast iPlayer content from a phone you don't get the black flashes, although the random dropped (i.e. repeated) frames does still happenz, albeit not quite as regularly as if you use the Chromecast's iPlayer app.  ...best just stick with the superior Apple device really.

It looks like google found a solution to our problem. They are working on a new upgraded Chromecast  4k

https://chromeunboxed.com/a-new-chromecast-with-google-tv-is-in-the-works/

So with a new one on the market, they will stop supporting old ones probably.

If google can't manage to come up with a fix, despite their gigantious  software development department, for the current issue, then I will return my unit, get a refund and buy another piece of hardware, most likely not a google one though 😕

mghughes

The CCWGTV "HD" version (which I have) was only released on the 22nd of September last year, so I doubt they'd stop supporting that so quickly.

They just did it.

This thread is without resolution since Nov 22.

Unfortunately, movies still work better on my old TV with Tizen Smart TV. In the videos on the internet, I was assured that Google would support their device all the time and with quick fixes - if necessary 😞

I gave up on this device and move to use the Samsung Tizen apps, now the Chromecast is only for the apps that are not available on the tv, it's a shame because I really liked the device before the update and now is garbage, I expected more from Google to support their own device but I was wrong.

Interesting thread. I have had this stuttering before with playback on another app, but decided to ignore it.  Today I was watching the F1 test sessions on the F1TV app on my new CCGTVHD and noticed that it stuttered every few seconds. How annoying. So I decided to play with things. Now I found out that when I updated the Deco mesh network app and disabled the mesh ability for the CC and allowed it to have a dedicated connection with the living room entry point only (the entry point in the kitchen is maybe too nearby), the stuttering was gone. And when I enabled it again it stayed gone. Not to return again until now. So maybe the common issue can be found in mesh network settings. Does this ring a bell?

Frame drops can easily be caused by the network, or how your device interacts with the local network. It seems you are experiencing that with your mesh. It could just be the mesh or sensitivity of the CCGTVHD to that connection. However, many of us are seeing frame drops cause by the chromecast itself.

It would be interesting if you compared the F1TV app's performance on the CCHTVHD vs running the app natively on the TV or another device, but using the same type of network connection.

Personally, I saw frame drops no matter how I connected the chromecast to the network, and did not see it on other devices like the TV's native apps or my Nvidia Shield.

There is update coming... maybe we will get lucky and there is a fix hidden in it too... https://blog.google/products/google-tv/new-content-pages/

Do they need to send an update to change the home screen? It might just be a change to a bunch of html or XML on a Google server. I'm not in the USA but we'll all be interested to hear if an update does drop.

For the last time.

The issue is not your tv.

The issue is not the apps on the chromecast.

The issue is that the chromecast is not adjusting its refresh rate to the content that is playing. Forcing a netflix movie at 24 fps to play on chromecast in 60 fps causes stuttering. And yes the processor of the google chromecast isnt great.

Vintage

I think that explains the judder, but not so much the frame drops...might multiple CC bugs.

Hey folks - just want to toss into the ring here that I am seeing the same issue. Latest update Chromecast with Google TV (1080p). Consistently poor playback, previous non Google TV chromecast did not have these issues. No problem streaming from other devices. Thanks!

Four month later, no fix.

All user are blind? Only us see this bug? Why nobody from google answer ?

This post is long, with example, your client have tested everything.

Oh...see the fix, just SOLD new device after broke the actual GCWGTV

Yep, the new device is on the way, and that is a more profitable way to fix the old mistakes 😉

Yeah I am also a bit frustrated right now. Netflix and HBO Max work much better (no stutter/frame rate drops) on my old Samsung with Tizen TV 🤷

I filled the form out.  I am only having this issue with sport events on YTTV.  I dont have this issue on the native app on my Samsung TV.  I have the Q85A NeoLED TV (Their previous flagship before the TV refresh a few months ago).  I'm also hardwired so I know bandwith isnt an issue (I pay for GB service and I always get at or just under 1GB down).  I like the CCWGTV because of the interface but I'm about to just ditch them all (I have them on 5 TV's) because not being able to take advantage of the 4K service I pay extra for is insane.

bertarada

The change in the interface will be to make it faster.  Since android 12 it is very slow in addition to the rest of the problems. Android 13 I hope will be the definitive software for chromecast with google TV.

MartinMa

I’m having this problem too. Upgraded from an older chrome cast  without a remote to a new one that that has one. These stutters are nauseating

Pecata

Yeah, Google is pretending the issue doesn't exist. It is infuriating that they haven't even acknowledged this problem. This thing is unusable. I got it for free and still feels like a rip off.
