Chromecasts reboots randomly watching Netflix

Dauser
Community Member

My chromecast randomly reboots while streaming videos from Netflix. It usually happens after 10-15 minutes. Sometimes it works 1 or 2 hours just fine, sometimes it's constantly rebooting after 10 minutes.

I've tried running my chromecast on different TV and with different power supplies.

I also did a factory reset, but the problem remains.

The problem started a few weeks ago. Before that it was working just fine.

Cast-Firmware: 1.56.375994

I'm grateful for any suggestions.
Thanks in advance!

Mine too. Same problem. Often reboots itself every few minutes or even seconds. It got worse over time. I thought it was the splitter, but it's not. Very frustrating.

What the version of your Firmware? Did your device work flawlessly in the past?

Not sure about the firmware. Serial number 3902101ZEOEN

Hey there Dauser,

I am sorry to hear that your Chromecast device keeps rebooting on you, I imagine that gets pretty annoying when you're in the middle of a show! Let me just ask some questions to better understand what's happening:

  • Does this only happen when casting Netflix?
  • Does the same issue occur when casting from another device, such as a computer or tablet?
  • Does the same issue occur when casting from Netflix's website?
  • Is the Chromecast warm or hot at all when this happens?

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

Thanks for the follow up.

  • No, the problem does not only happen when casting Netflix. It also happened when casting Disney+.
  • No , it does not happen when casting from my laptop.
  • It does not happen when casting from Netflix's website on my laptop.
  • Yes, the chromecast is warm when it happens. However it's not very hot, so I'm not sure if overheating is the problem

No problem at all! Let me just a few more questions to narrow down the issue a bit more:

  • What is the make and model of the TV?
  • Is the Chromecast being powered by the TV, a power outlet, or a surge protector?
  • When it restarts, do you get an error message or does the screen just go black?
  • What color is the LED light on the Chromecast when this happens?

If the Chromecast is warm to the touch, but not uncomfortably warm, that shouldn't be the issue. Depending on what color the LED light is on the Chromecast or what error message the TV displays, it could be a power issue.

I look forward to your response!

Best regards,

Jeran

I experienced the issue with both a TV (Telefunken D43F553M1) and a computer monitor (LG 27UD58-B).
I also thought about a power issue. However the problem occured with the following setups:

  • original Chromcast cable plugged into TV USB
  • original Chromcast cable plugged into Samsung USB Charger (tried with different Wall sockets)
  • original Chromcast cable plugged into Hama USB Charger (tried with different Wall sockets)
  • other cable plugged into TV USB
  • other cable plugged into Samsung USB Charger (tried with different Wall sockets)
  • other cable plugged into Hama USB Charger (tried with different Wall sockets)

When it restarts, it just reboots without error message: Screen goes black and after a few seconds the Google boots screen is shown.

I'm gonna check for the LED lights and will report soon.

When the screen goes black and I look at my chromecast the light is yellow. Then it blinks once (it's off for about 0,1 seconds) and then it's yellow again. After a couple of seconds the LED light turns white.

Thanks for telling me that! For some reason, the Chromecast may be running into an error. If you are willing, would you be able to factory reset that Chromecast, re-set it back up again, and then try it again from there?

If the issue persists, would you also try connecting to a different network band? For example, if the Chromecast usually uses 5GHz, set it up on 2.4GHz, then give Netflix another try.

Factory-reset did not help.
I also tried connecting my chromecast to a different Wifi-network (different access point), but the problem remains.

Is it possible that other networks (that I cannot control) are the reason for the crash?

Hey there,

With your particular issue, it seems to be about overheating since all steps with cables and connections have been exhausted. If you get the chance, would you be willing to give the Chromecast support team a call for further steps?

I'm really sorry we weren't able to fix this issue on here, but if you had other questions, please let me know.

Best regards,

Jeran
