Devices cannot find Chromecast - strange icon on Chromecast screen

My Chromecast was working fine until yesterday but now I unable to cast anything because Home says the device is offline. Also, an icon (broken picture?) had also appeared beside the network name. It was never there before.

I have tried:

  • Rebooting the Chromecast
  • Factory restarting the Chromecast
  • Uninstalling and reinstalling the Home app
  • Verifying that my wifi channel hasn't changed
  • Restarting my router
  • Ensuring the router software is updated

I'm at all loss. Has anyone had similar experiences and/or have any ideas? Thank you.

Dealing with the same nightmare. My Google Wifi went out on Wednesday night and took 6 hours to come back online. Now I can't connect my Chromecast back to the Home app.

FYI, after doing a hard reset of the chromecast device, and waiting for about 2 hours for it to show up on the Google Home app, it finally connected again.

Glad to hear that your device righted itself.

Did you perform the hard reset by holding the Chromecast's power button? I tried that method, but still no-go.

Yes, for about 10 seconds, then I had to wait almost two hours for the Home app to realize it was there.

We did both a restart and a factory reset, waited overnight, but no change.

Thank you for the suggestion anyhow!

Dealing with the same issue just at random. Sometimes it connects right away other times it says it’s offline & won’t let me connect.

Seems to be an issue with many people after an update about a week or two ago. So there doesn't look to be a "this-solution-works-for-everyone" solution, unfortunately. If it's working for you or corrects itself on its own, all the best. For the rest of us, here's just hoping that the next app update corrects this.

Hi folks,

Rmdlvy and Lambo6, thanks for reaching out and for being a step ahead of us. Give the steps below a try and let me know how it goes:

  1. Plug in your Chromecast into a different HDMI port on your TV.
  2. Reboot your TV and Wi-Fi router.
  3. Reset your Chromecast with Google TV (HD).
  4. Use another network to isolate it.

chadlupkes, I’m glad it’s resolved now. If you need further help, let me know.

Regards,

Juni

Update: It's working! I'm not sure how.

I did factory resets and uninstall/reinstall of Google Home time after time, and somehow after trying both again, it connected. I don't have any explanation.

A good thing, too, as I was just about to buy myself a new Chromecast.

Best of luck with everyone else having this issue!
