Freeview

Hi, I have just set up Google Chromecast 4K with Google TV and I have found the Freeview TV app for Australia in the Google Play Store to allow me to watch Free-to-air TV channels without an antenna however when I try to install the Freeview app onto my Chromecast device I receive the following message: Freeview by Freeview Australia Limited isn’t available on Google Play on this device.

Can anyone please advise why the Freeview app by Freeview Australia Limited is not available for my Chromecast device?

Are there any other apps available for my Chromecast device that would allow me to view local Australian free-to-air TV channels?

Hi Tlecky,

The service provider develops their app and chooses what devices it can be installed on so you would need to contact them to request they make it available for the Chromecast with Google TV.

https://www.freeview.com.au/support

It's the same in the UK with our 'All 4' app not being available for the Chromecast with Google TV but available for Android phones and tablets. I use the app on my phone and then 'cast' what I want to watch to my Chromecast with Google TV.

Thank you. I have sent off a query to Freeview Support requesting reasons why their Freeview can be developed to be included and made available for Chromecast & Google TV but I have not received a reply as yet.

Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for touching base with me.
I have received a reply from Freeview regarding their app being made available on Google Chromecast however they advised the following:
Freeview is currently available on Connected TVs, iOS and Android phones and tablets and via web browsers only.

At this stage there is no further information available on the Freeview app for any other platforms or devices.

Chromecast is only available on individual network apps at this stage.”

Very disappointing but I can only hope that they may have a change of mind in the future!

Cheers,
TLecky.

I'm in the UK and can't find or use Freeview either so it's not possible to easily browse and watch live TV shows. I think I might have to get a refund as its way too much of a faff to juggle two remotes. And I thought Chromecast was supposed to make things easy!

@urban75

Freeview do not make an app that is very usable in the UK, there is one but it just requires you to install all the channel service provider apps.

This is something that is out of Google's control as all providers develope and control what devices their apps can be used on.

I think that you'll find the same with all other popular devices, Roku, Firestick etc...

Hi urban75,

Yes Chromecast with Google TV makes internet services easy to use along with Googles algorithms that predict what type of content you like to watch. But freeview seems stuck in the past and still only usefully available on over the air digi boxes.

Hi Jeran,

I do not have any other questions about the Freeview app other than are there any other apps available on Chromecast that I could use to access free to air TV channels in Adelaide, South Australia?

Hey there Tlecky,

You can check out what apps are available through the Google Play website. If you are signed in to your Google account, when you select an app, you should see under the "Install" button what devices the app is available on.

I hope that helps, if you had any other questions, please let me know!

Best regards,

Jeran
