Google TV Chromecast - YouTube Playback Speed Control MISSING

onpoint_5280
Community Member

When viewing YouTube videos using Google TV Chromecast it is no longer possible to use the video playback speed option. The icon for the control has disappeared, basically overnight.

What happened?

Is this temporary?

If not, I suggest there are a large number of people who want the speed control option restored.

Thank you.

Hi there,

I saw some similar reports about the speed control missing. I will escalate this to the Community Specialist team for Chromecast and see if they can offer any info.

Thanks for reporting.

Jill

Any updates on this?

what's the ETA?

I think it is removed on purpose, which will increase your screen time

Wah

It was removed because it was choppy and inconsistent.

If you had a stable and fast internet from ISP, and TV nor older than 2 years it works without issues. That was not a reason.

Wah
Community Member

Yes it was.  They removed it on any device they deemed not performant.  That's why it is available on the Chromecast with Google TV among a handful of other devices.

First, there is no such exact list of devices (vendors, models, chipsets) on which this function has been disabled by purpose. If that was the case then why there are few users on which the functionality has been restored without their interaction?

My conclusion is that real reason was to cap extensive bandwidth requirements, caused by end users when using higher video speeds at the same video quality. One way to get this under control is to discard "top talkers" in each area based on usage statistics Google surely have. Run the script to "blacklist" heavy bandwidth users based on unique android id of device to test the results. This "issue" is not caused by users, SW version, location, ISP, etc. Just to maintain bandwidth resources on DC side.

This happened to me on Sony bravia android tv as well. So frustrating google. I will stop paying for their premium if this feature does not return.

Same the whole reason I got premium was to watch YouTube and learn faster with the speed button

Same here, bought premium for same reason, speed does not work on android TV and chromecast for me. It is really annoying.

Same here.  If they are cutting features I’m less inclined to pay for premium.

Every time Google removes some good features like this.

All.of a sudden Google removed playback speed option from youtube.

Still I donot Understand what is the problem with that option for google.

Actually it is very helpful for many users like us.

Thank You all

Hey there,

I was in contact with the Google Chromecast team, and I was informed that the option for playback speed was missing for a few days, but has since returned. Is anyone still experiencing the missing Playback controls? Please let me know, I'd be happy to look into it!

Best regards,
Jeran

I have 2 Nvidia Shield TV's - one is a 2017 and the other is a 2019. They are both running the YouTube app version 2.16.03. The 2019 has the speed control option but the 2017 does not.

I’m still missing the button (Sony Bravia X900H). It disappeared a few months ago and never got it back. Which makes me not watch YouTube on my TV anymore 😕

Hello Jeran,
I was considering buying a Chromecast With Google TV. But I needed to confirm something first. I need to be able to have speed control when watching YouTube videos while watching them on the big screen TV. The speed control that is vital is the .75 speed. That .75 speed playback is available if I am viewing YouTube on a laptop in my office.
The .75 speed is also available if I view YouTube on my Android 11 phone.

But Google has chosen to not make the .75 speed playback available with the YouTube channel on the YouTube app downloaded from the LG TV store. Instead Google has chosen to only offer .25 and .50 playback speeds along with 1.25, 1.50, and 2.0 speeds for this app. When I use the built in browser on my 2018 LG 4K TV to look at YouTube, then there are no speeds offered. Also, when I use the YouTube channel on my Roku 4660 4K device, there are now --No-- speed options offered.

It is imperative and vital to have the .75 speed playback option, in order to be able to comprehend and understand educational and instructional videos, where more often than not, the narrator speaks too rapidly.

Very Sincerely,
texas_rover

I can attest to the feature working on Chromecast with TV on two separate Chromecast. After playing a video hit the up button twice, then right until you get to the gear. Speed will be an option. If there's an easier way I don't know it.

Could you please confirm if the Chromecast for TV gives the option for .75 playback speed with YouTube videos.

I can 100% conform, if you buy the oblong shaped Chromecast with the remote called so eloquently call "Google Chromecast with Google TV" (just rolls off the tongue) supports from .25x to 2x speeds on YouTube videos. I've included a picture!
