My Chromecast remote suddenly stopped working (except for some/many voice commands). I had to muddle through all kinds of threads dedicated to Bluetooth pairing etc. to discover that it needed a software update, which I couldn't seem to do until I wrestled the Chromecast into forgetting the remote and then pairing with it again after changing its name etc etc etc. Once the update was done, it magically worked just fine again -- and here's my question: The unit is connected via my Google account. Can I not just be sent a message to update the software rather than struggle with all this? One upside: in the process, I managed to connect the CCast to my TV remote so now at least I have a backup!

If you have an android phone, there is a built in android remote. On my Pixel, it's in the quick settings. It works exactly like the CCWGTV remote, and I used that when my remote died and I had to remove it first from the settings on the CC before I could re-pair it.

I have a Moto G6 Play but no remote in quick settings or anywhere else I can see ......

I believe it's built in the Pixel, but it is here also to manually install:

You need Android 11 or up to use the quick remote.
