I've found lots of information about customizing the Chromecast ambient mode slide show, but how can I completely get rid of it? I have a room where I leave the TV on 24/7 to keep it available to play music or apps. I don't want a slideshow, or any backdrop at all, just a black screen when it's not in use. Is this not possible? If not it would be a nice option. I have my lighting set up through google home/nest for different times and moods, and I really just don't want the extra light and colors in the room when I'm not using the TV, but I also want to be able to keep it available without having to find the remote and turn it on every time I want to use it. Yeah, I know that's lazy, but isn't that the point of Google Home in the first place, to walk around your house and just tell your stuff what to do?

Google doesn't offer that option.
You could try making a Google Photos Album of a bunch of "almost black" pictures and then set Ambient Mode to use that album. If you also turn off a lot of the options (time, weather, etc) you are mostly where you want to be.
Make about a dozen of those "pictures". In the past, Ambient Mode didn't like very small albums and tended to add random pictures if there were only a few.
