I cannot get Chromecast (2nd gen) to connect

Ron80504

I did a factory reset on an old Chromecast, 2nd gen. The Home app finds the Chromecast. I select set up. I get to the Connecting to Chromecast screen and get about 10 minutes of bouncing bologna before I get the error message " cannot communicate with Chromecast. What am I doing wrong?

Nevermind, I bought a FireTV stick. It actually works.

Hey there Ron80504,

I'm sorry to hear that your Chromecast is giving you issues. Even though you've already replaced the device, did you still want any troubleshooting for it, or do you have any other questions or concerns for me? If so, please let me know, I'd be happy to help you out.

Best regards,
Jeran

Jeran:

Thanks for responding. I would actually like to get the Chromecast working. I think they are good devices. Any insight you can provide would be helpful. Here's a few things from my experience that may be worth knowing.

  1. I believe it is a 2nd gen device. The entire unit plugs into the HDMI port i.e. there is no cable that plugs into the HDMI with the Chromecast as a dongle.
  2. I have factory reset it numerous times.
  3. I am using the Google "Home" app to try and connect the device.
  4. The app finds the Chromecast with the new number (from the factory reset).
  5. I go to set it up and I get bouncing bologna for about 10 minutes and then it tells me it cannot connect.
  6. Funny, it never prompts me to access the WiFi that the Home app on the phone is using. I would think that would be a key thing for the Chromecast to know.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers, Ron

Hey there Ron80504,

No problem at all, I'd be happy to help you get your Chromecast up and running! First thing, what color is the LED light on the Chromecast? If the Chromecast is throwing an error, it will appear via the LED light. From there, I would follow the steps listed in this article. You can go ahead and skip the steps you've already attempted. If the problem persists, follow the steps in this article as well. I apologize about all the articles, there are a lot of factors when it comes to connection issues.

I look forward to hearing from you again!

Best regards,

Jeran

Hey there Ron80504,

That's good to hear that there aren't any errors with the Chromecast. Did you have a chance to follow the steps in the two articles I listed? If so, try manually connecting to the Chromecast's SSID:

  1. Go to the phone’s Settings.
  2. Open Wi-Fi and connect to the Chromecast SSID (Example: Chromecast1234).
  3. Go to the Google Home app and try to set up again.

Let me know if that allows you to connect properly. If not, we can try a couple of more things, such as setting up the Chromecast with a different device.

Best regards,
Jeran
