No sound on Chromecast with Google tv

Adamsm86
Community Member

I keep getting no sound on my Chromecast with Google TV.  I have to keep restarting it to get sound back working. Sound works on tv as I use it daily but as soon as I switch to Chromecast then the sound goes and I have to reboot Chromecast again. Is there a fix for this? It was working fine for over a year but only recently it's been happening. Tv is the same so no new hardware.

Hey folks,

Good news! Last week, we started rolling out an update for Chromecast with Google TV that should mitigate this behavior. Kindly observe your devices from time to time and give us a shout if you continue to experience it.

We appreciate everyone’s patience.

Best,
Kimy

Why would you close this when so many people having issues ?

Kathryn

You would think that they would wait for a working firmware before closing this thread

Glad you didn't close this thread, that would have been ludicrous to do when this is affecting so many of us, and even now there is still no solution it seems. This has been annoying to deal with for a whole month now, it practically makes the Chromecast unusable for an entertainment system without sound.

@Jeran  Simply closing the thread is not going to resolve the issue affecting so many users. It will only cause users to open new threads by new users to make Google aware of this issue. Can someone with Google's ear please ask the devs to correct the issue that was caused by the last firmware update? This is like having to stop and start your car every time you want to listen to the radio.

Same issue here!

So what's crazy about this is that anyone buying a new one is getting this newest update. They must be getting returns like crazy by people thinking it's defective. You'd think that would get their butts in gear. But alas.

I came here to find answer to this issue - and disappointed to read people still having issues after nearly a month. It’s fine saying to reboot - but I have to get up on step ladder every night to do this. I’ve never had a problem with any of my google items - but this is extremely annoying

any news on fix ??

kathryn

Why do you need a step ladder? Have you lost your remote? HDR mode works fine so it's a problem with Dolby I beleive. Change it to HDR in display settings and the sound is fine until they release a fix, hopefully it will be this year at some point!

First post with at least a temporary solution. Thanks!!

HDR is for display, not sound.

Yes you are correct, but is fixes the problem for some reason, try it!

When you switch anything like HDR to SDR it does a small refresh you could also trick it by switching to say 23 frames from 60 frames that refreshes and sometimes the audio comes back on

You still need to switch the audio mode each day because this is NOT a permanent fix. The firmware is still broken.

Need a step ladder as tv installed high on wall!!

yet another chromecast with the same issue for context

Sorry Google. We bought an Apple TV 4k today and won't be coming back. Lack of communication is the major issue. Not acknowledging the problem or providing any updates.

I have the same issue, and this is very annoying.

I regret switching from Fire TV. Google Assistant is not as smart as alexa on TV. And even with 2GB RAM, google tv is very slow. On top of that, now I have to restart the device every time.

Same identical issue here. I bypassed it (while waiting for a real fix) by deactivating all supported audio formats (3x Dolby, DTS) in Settings -> Display and audio -> Advanced audio settings.

At least, by doing so there's no need to repeat this operation every time.

It has happened for nearly a month!!!! How come it is still not solved? what's wrong with google? It takes months to get a solution for this issue?

My parents feel very hard to use with it. it is hard for them to do the restart everytime.

Credit to @Carey80 for this workaround...

Go to Settings > Display & Sound > Dynamic range & Color format

Select HDR

I'm guessing that the Chromecast isn't passing audio out via HDMI ARC reliaby when Dolby Vision is enabled.

Google really knows how to run a hardware company. The problem is organizational, they are rewarded for creating new products instead of supporting existing ones. Then they piss everyone off when they break something that didn't need fixing and it's now over a month since they've been looking into it with no word. Really encouraging people to buy Google products...

Hi have the same problem since 2 months ago maybe. Today I just disabled CEC in my TV so I turn on first my TV and then the Chromecast, so is frustating but works. Waiting for any update

Same problem. Plz fix.

Any update? I’ve read every single post and I’m in the same boat: Hisense Roku TV, GCTV, HDMI to Vizio sound bar. Experiencing the exact same issue: auto update and now the audio doesn’t work unless I manually restart GCTV. Very annoying.

Switch display settings from Dolby vision to HDR. Not a proper fix, just a workaround unfortunately.

I have the same setup - what has been working for me (for the last couple of days) is to power off the tv/system using the CC remote and use the roku tv remote to turn the power on for the tv and select the CC input.  (I have CEC enabled, so the CC turns on when the TV is turned on).  So far, the sound is working properly without the need to boot the CC or switch to HDR.

I hope this works for you ... Good Luck!

Hi All,

I have a strange situation with my Chromecast with Google TV 4K. Everyday I have to reboot the Chromecast to get sound again through my soundbar. The Chromecast is connected to my LG OLED TV and the TV is connected through the HDMI-ARC option to the LG Soundbar. This setup has worked without issues for the first couple of months (since Feb 2023), but now (for about 3 weeks), when I start all up with the Chromecast remote power button, I have no sound. I can start any app and I can start any show or cast to the device, but no sound. The only solution is to reboot the Chromecast through the settings menu and then all works normally again, until I shutdown the system (with the remote power button) and have it off for a couple of minutes. Then, the sound is gone again.

I have tried several things like:
- Changing the types of audio that are allowed from auto to only 1 specific type
- Setting the device back to factory settings
- Trying other ways to shutdown (just shutting down the TV with the LG remote)

Is this a commen problem, or should I return the device and get a new one?

Thanks

Duncan

Hi,

I have the same issue with LG SN4 soundbar.  Unfortunately i have no idea how to fix it.

Problem apeared couple weeks ago. Before that everything was ok.

I have the same problem on a Philips TV. Really annoying. 😕

Edit: its been fine for months, but this has started in the past few weeks. Tried switching HDMI inputs on the TV, but no change.

I'm having the same issue with a relatively current LG WebOS TV. Recently switched to this TV from a Xiaomi Mi TV, which didn't have the issue.

I guess it's the newer HDMI iteration on the LG TV.

I hope this will be fixed soon.

Workaround for now: I'm unplugging the power brick when I turn of the TV. Saves some standby power as well ;).

So many comments here!

I haven't read them all. But ditto to the same issue.

Throw in the bucket with all the other stuff Google is breaking across their range right now.

Pretty fed up with their quality control

This is an absolute disgrace that Google can do this to so many people.

I paid for a 4K Chromecast and for it to not be working for so long is inexcusable by Google.

Seems like we need a class action against Google and/or report them to the Federal regulator.  I'd like to think that Google are not Apple like in their arrogance towards consumers, but it seems I'm sadly mistaken.

Hello Google? Is anybody there even working on this? (crickets)

Guess not. 🤨

So I was having the same issue. Called Google support they went thru the whole script and finally had me do a Factory Reset {scary but doable}.

What I noticed was that now my chromecast remote ON-OFF button didn't turn off my whole TV like before the reset it only turned off the chromecast.

So the solution was Turn ON TV, then Turn ON chromecast, Amazingly I had sound. Then before shutting off my TV I Turned OFF the chromecast.  Turning OFF the chromecast is the secret it was getting out of sync with the TV.

Now for the big test. Turn the TV back on, Turn ON the chromecast, sound was there again. Turn OFF the chromecast, then Turn OFF the TV. Repeated this 10 times , worked every time.

If your chromecast remote only turns off your chromecast presently I think you could skip the factory reset. Just make sure to Turn ON and OFF with TV.

Hope this works for everyone.

I posted this as a work-around - if you leave the CEC enabled when you turn off the CC it will also turn off your TV, and visa-versa (when you turn on your TV, the CC will turn on. This allows the handshake to work properly for the Dolby setting.
