No sound on Chromecast with Google tv

Adamsm86

I keep getting no sound on my Chromecast with Google TV.  I have to keep restarting it to get sound back working. Sound works on tv as I use it daily but as soon as I switch to Chromecast then the sound goes and I have to reboot Chromecast again. Is there a fix for this? It was working fine for over a year but only recently it's been happening. Tv is the same so no new hardware.

Hey folks,

Good news! Last week, we started rolling out an update for Chromecast with Google TV that should mitigate this behavior. Kindly observe your devices from time to time and give us a shout if you continue to experience it.

We appreciate everyone’s patience.

Best,
Kimy

A few days ago the sound started to get bad on my device. Interestingly, the sound works in the Netflix app. In the Amazon Prime app, it is silent. Yesterday, the SkyShowtime app went mute.

Google released a new software version which admittedly fixes this issue, please upgrade your chromecast and report.

Mine seems fine since three days

Comforting to know! Atleast it aint a houshold problem. When I contacted Google they made me try the chromecast on a different TV, on a different network, check if network was updated, if TV was updated, if soundbar was updated, facorty reset the chromecast, etc. etc. And then they actuelly sent me a new chromecast, just got it today and guess what. Same problem.. I am kind of suprised that they actuelly sent me a new one instead of just informing of this ongoing problem. This is clearly a problem on their end.

Any news on a fix for Phillips TVs ?

Hi guys. Heres my problem:

When watching shows/movies from disney+, hbo and sometimes netflix (only standard, not 4k subscription), every so often, the sound simply stops working, mostly this happens when i pause a show, or if i skip intro or simmilar. Only way so far is to turn of tv and chromecast, and restart the app and show, which solves th eproblem. I have no lagging issues with the spund otherwise.

Connection is wifi (about 3-400 mbps)

Setup:

Samsung q960 soundbar (with stmos support)

Sony tv

Chromecast with google tv

I have the chromecast directly in the soundbar, then from soundbar via hdmi to tv. The tv only acts as a screen, i don't use build in sony software, since the tv and soundbar just won't work together.

Issue seems to be most common in apps that support 4k and atmos, and lower 'quality' apps such as skyshowtime seem to work fine.

I have tried unplugging and restarting wifi, soundbar, chromecast etc. Several times, but the issue persists.

Any one of you got tips and tricks?

Thanks in advance

What output for audio are you using on your Google TV Chromecast? Are you using HDMI out? If so, hold the HOME button until the side panel comes out on the right. Click the gear icon to enter settings. Select Display and Sound, select Advanced Sound Settings. Make sure it's set to "Automatic". Try watching your preferred streaming service again, let me know if this no longer becomes a problem. (If this fixes the problem, it may be that you customized the format wrong to something your TV doesn't properly support. I'm assuming the TV and Soundbar are set up in a single cable configuration -usually through HDMI ARC.)

Hi. I use hdmi as output, and have set it to automatic (and tried every other setting too)

it seems that the problem lies in the streaming services that use high quality aound outputs. If i virw sky showtime for instance, theres no problem with the sound.

Bandwith etc. Is good and stable

Hi folks,

Thanks for your help, @BackieTPD.

@Sammy6, this is closely related to the “No Audio” issue that requires restarting to get working again. Our team is already aware of this, and an update will be rolled out one of these days. Since this is the same discussion, we'll move this conversation to the main thread, and we'll continue to update it as soon as we have some news to share.

Please note that once done, this thread will be locked.

Thanks,

Kimy

Hello Kimy, any idea when this update will come to the Netherlands? I just got my device yesterday. And I have this issue. Really don't want to go thru the pain of returning the item

Hi

Still having the issue.

Can you give an ETA for a fix ?

Product is pretty much garbage with this bug and a big waste of everyone's time.

Thanks

Thanks so much for your response! Unfortunately, the updates that you are in the midst of our causing that exact problem… No sound… For me. I have Chromecast minus. google TV. Casting from iOS to a Westinghouse TV. Have done a factory reset on chrome cast and rebooted my modem and a Chromecast device, as well as checking all of the connections to the power source. Nothings worked. This issue started about 32 hours ago.  Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I've tried everything including the update and still no audio from any source in the Google TV device.  Any further suggestions?

Hi there - I've done a factory reset, software update, set up the remote and google home  and still no sound whatsoever from chromecast.  When setting up google home there was no audio at all, no music but the remote found the volume controls on the TV (Pioneer plasma).

Any suggestions?

I just bought a chrome cast device and get no sound. The tv plays the sound from the channel it’s on, not from the streaming app.

According to this message, the "solution" started rolling out two months ago. I find this very frustrating. I still have the same issue. I randomly have no sound until I restart the Chromecast. What is going on here? Has the problem disappeared for anyone who previously had it? Looking at the posts here, the issue obviously has not been solved.

Edit: I have contacted the Google Support Team, and my Chromecast has been replaced. The sound used to be gone randomly; sometimes the picture disappeared after flickering for a while. All this is gone with the new device! Thanks to the support team! 🙂

So just to confirm, you guys actually have no sound at all even when "Do not use 5.1 surround" is activated?

My problem all along has been the 5.1 surround, I have tried both "Manual" and "Automatic" settings and a heap of other things to mostly no avail. After the update two days ago I checked everything again and I thought it was fixed for a while.

So I turned on the 5.1 surround in GCCTV4K, set my AVR to "Dolby Digital" (not "Plus" then I tried Prime, working correctly, then YouTube, good to go, SBS and IView, same, also checking various dolby digital formats with each App, no problems, go to Netflix, seems fine, however, could no longer cycle through dolby digital formats, remote button unresponsive for a change to any other format (or DTS for instance).

I then turned everything off for 10 minutes, and upon powering up again, no sound on anything until I turn off the 5.1 again.

Just by the by I did inform them that at one stage I could get 5.1 on YouTube one some channels and silence on others, which is what led me to believe it is a codec issue, (Oh how I pine for my old Boxee Box which could play absolutely anything you threw at it no matter how obscure)!

So the wash up from my latest tests would suggest Netflix "locked" the AVR format somehow, and that screwed up everything on a power up.

On another matter I can confirm the incorrect picture aspect ratio on boot up appears to be fixed. Lets hope they can finally sort out this audio crap.

Fort the record my Yamaha VX3800 has Dolby® True HD, DTS-HD™ Master Audio, Dolby® Digital Plus, DTS-HD™ High Resolution Audio, Dolby® Digital EX, DTS-ES™, Pro Logic® IIx, and DTS Neo:6 decoding, Neural-THX Surround decoder for XM's HD Surround channels.

After the recent software update, my no-sound problem seemed to have disappeared; when I now switched to Chromecast, the sound was there without having to unplug power to the CC and plug back in. However, yesterday when I switched to the TV (external tuner-box) and back, the sound was gone again, and I had to unplug/plug the power to the CC. I hope this was a one-off, but I am less sure now that the problem is really gone.

Hi All,

I have updated my Chromecast a couple of days ago and since then, no more issues. The sound is working everytime I activate the system through the remote. I am running the following version at the moment:
Android 12
SecurityUpdate: 1 April 2023
Kernel: 4.9.269
OS Build: STTE.230319.008.R1.10015454

What make TV ? Seems Phillips still have issues

LG OLED TV with and LG Soundbar. All is still working as it should be.

Once again I ask,

So just to confirm, you guys actually have/had no sound at all even when "Do not use 5.1 surround" is activated???

My issue is I can't use the 5.1 through my (7.1) AVR/amp.

Yes, had no sound until the update last week fixed the bug and restored function. I didn't have an issue getting 5.1 sound if I turned off Dolby Vision (though the picture didn't look as good).

The bug is in the 5.1 audio decoding if you disable surround sound it should work but that’s a deal breaker, unless someone is using a small sound bar in front of the tv

Is anyone else having brutal wifi connectivity problems after the update? Everything app I’m using works for like 5 minutes and then drops to lower quality, then just buffers until stopping or crashing the app. I have no wifi issues on any other devices. This getting to the point I’m gunna toss it in the trash and buy a Roku. Something that can be hardwired. I’ve always had the device go through some issues late at night but never like this. It just disconnects from the internet unprompted. I love other google products and services but I’m good on this. I’ll find another service that work’s consistently and doesn’t need 2 months to solve an issue affecting 50% of their customers.

Ok, I have a bit more info on this issue, firstly the last update apparently broke the audio pretty well completely for most/many people, guess they were trying to fix the 5.1 issue?

Secondly I have also learned that because Dolby attracts a royalty for using their tech, Google won't anti up, so their devices do NO processing of the signal!! I believe it just passes through, so if your TV/AVR/Sound bar doesn't have the capability to process the particular audio signal you are receiving from Prime/Netflix/Disney/Youtube etc. you are going to be greatly (me) disappointed.

That is my reading of the situation as advised by Google reps online.

However, I was also told by a GR that Fibre optic could not pass through Dolby 5.1 ! so how much do these idiots really know? The GCCTV4K is a great product completely let down by a total lack of proper support.

I have the Walmart onn google TV the 2023 model plugged in to an Onkyo 5.1 receiver with all the same issues, even after a reboot Paramont, plus movies and tv shows that are in 5.1 , I lose audio after a few minutes into the show.

youtube videos that are recorded in 5.1 also triggers lost audio bug as well

even if the Home Screen sits idle for about 20 minutes it also triggers the bug as well.

Different product. Google has to provide guidance on the update and then ONN has to deploy the update. This is similar to the model that led to great smart displays coming from Lenovo, poor support from Google to Lenovo (presumably because more manufacturers didn't develop smart displays and speakers as Google hoped), eventually Google limited functionality of 3rd-party devices with things like support for browsing webpages and Google Home integration, and now the 3rd party device program is completely done - Lenovo doesn't make smart displays anymore.

I would expect Google to do the same thing with third party Google TV streaming devices if they don't generate the expected advertising revenue from the Google TV platform.

Texml320

Well if they can't even get their own devices to work correctly what hope do third parties have?

I've been telling them this for months! How many IT experts does it take to change a **bleep** lightbulb?
