No sound on Chromecast with Google tv

Adamsm86
Community Member

I keep getting no sound on my Chromecast with Google TV.  I have to keep restarting it to get sound back working. Sound works on tv as I use it daily but as soon as I switch to Chromecast then the sound goes and I have to reboot Chromecast again. Is there a fix for this? It was working fine for over a year but only recently it's been happening. Tv is the same so no new hardware.

Hey folks,

Good news! Last week, we started rolling out an update for Chromecast with Google TV that should mitigate this behavior. Kindly observe your devices from time to time and give us a shout if you continue to experience it.

We appreciate everyone’s patience.

Best,
Kimy

I'm a little confused. I am one the responders who pointed out the audio problem. I've tried every method suggested that works for some with no luck, except one. How do you reset it? By the way, mine was a newly purchased CC. When I first hooked it up audio was fine. Thought I would check it out later. Now it never works.

Same issue here. Everyday and slmetime twice a day I have to unplug Chromecast for google tv to get the sound back. I used to brag about this device and I feel I jinxed it! I see this thread is three weeks old and nothing is done! Open AI ChatGPT beating you (the kings of data and search) to AI is now making sense! Do something!

Same issue here. It has been happening for at least three weeks. Very frustrating.

Same issue as everybody else.

Easiest way to get it working for me on a Philips TV is pressing the power button on Chromecast Remote - which turns off the TV, but not the Chromecast - and then press it once again to turn the TV back on.
However, this doesn’t always work, but sometimes.

Wife Approval Factor is critically low right now.

Google, step up your game.
Please either revert back to an older software version or tell us when a fix can be expected.
I’m glad I don’t have Google software running in my car.

Totally agree with you on the wife approval factor. Constantly have to battle comments like "why don't we just get Apple TV?"

I think I got a temporary fix to this until Google decides to do something about it. Settings/System/Power & Energy snd set it up to “Never”.  Somehow something happens  when system becomes inactive and turns off TV automatically. I manually turn off the TV if not in use and when turned it on again I didn’t experience this sound issue today at all. I will confirm this at the end of the week again.

I am trying it now! Thanks for replying 👍

Hi @Sammy6

I am afraid it is a known issue at this moment.

Hello,

I'm having to restart my Chromecast tv everytime I turn on my TV or the sound wouldn't work.

Any suggestions how I can fix it?

This is currently a known issue that Google is actively working on. In the meantime, the only workaround is to restart your device when this issue occurs, unfortunately.

I hope this is on a high priority list of defects to fix because this affects the end user directly and is very frustrating. It's not practical to restart the device multiple times a day. Switching to fire tv until it's fixed.

It’s not only at start up but if you play a few YouTube videos with mixed audio formats like 5.1 and PCM then back to 5.1 you lose audio as well even playing TV shows on Paramount plus that are recorded in 5.1

after playing a few commercials that are  recorded in stereo then back to 5.1  l lose audio

I have the onn google tv 2023 version hook up to an onkyo 5.1 receiver

I want to point out that this is a Google TV issue as well. It happens on my Chromecast With Google TV and on my new ONN Google TV device. One has the January Update, the other a March Update.. Both running Android 12 and Google TV. My Chromecast worked great for several years.. This is a huge PITA. I am close to switching back to Roku or FireTV. I have both devices available, but I really like Google TV better. But not well enough to reboot it 3 or more times per day.

Hi, since last software update when I turn on my google tv sometimes it does not have audio. I have to restart it from system configurations in order to get working. Is it a known issue in this update? (STTE.221215.004.A1.9716989)

same here. Panasonic TV + Sonos Beam soundbar.

Worked before last update for more than one year w/o any problems

Hi folks,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community. A few questions: what version of Chromecast with Google TV are you using (4K/HD)? Is this happening in all apps/contents? Aside from restarting the Chromecast, what other steps have you taken?

Give the steps below a try and let me know how it goes:

  • Plug your Chromecast into a different HDMI port on your TV.
  • Reboot your TV and Wi-Fi router.
  • If it fails, try a factory reset, then re-setup.

Thanks,
Kimy

Hi Kimy, thank you for the support.

I have the 4K version. It is happening in all apps ( YouTube, twitch, etc) even for system navigation sound.

Rebooting the TV didn't resolve the issue for me, the only way is rebooting the Chromecast

i have a fix for this issue:
i removed an unused bluetooth speaker from chromecast setup.

now i have sound after power on via remote.

In my case, I don't have any external Bluetooth audio system.

I switched to other HDMI port and the problem still happen. I  checked antenna channels and the audio works (to discard tv speaker problem)

Hi testica,

Thank you for this information. To confirm, have you tried resetting the Chromecast to its default settings? Also, try using another TV to isolate this.

Let me know how it goes.

Kimy

A factory reset is an annoying "solution" for me, I will lost all my installed app and any setup. Is there other alternative?

Hey folks,

Chiming in, we already forwarded the information to the team and we're just waiting for an update. Meanwhile, could you change the dynamic range and color format to SDR?

Follow the steps below to know-how:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap your Chromecast with Google TV.
  3. Go to "Settings" > "Display and sound" > "Display" > Change the dynamic range and color format to SDR

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi Muddi,

Changed to SDR but didn't fix the problem. Then changed to HDR and worked.

We all need assistance on this sound issue.  Going on 3 weeks for me and I am ready to go buy a Roku.  When can we expect some kind of reply?

Hi testica,

Perfect! I'm happy to hear that changing the dynamic range and color format of your device resolved the issue. I'll keep the thread open so we can monitor your device.

I recommend everyone to try the steps above. If it's still the same, try adding the step provided by @testica.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi Muddi,
Would be an update soon to fix the issue? Because if I leave Dolby audio option the problem come back when I restart. I guess that changing this setting is a temporal workaround because my preference is to always use Dolby audio

Hi Muddi! I change it back to HDR and worked. However, since my TV has Dolby audio and sorts, I would like to have that option checked. Do you think this issue will be resolved in the next update? Thanks.

Factory reset doesn't help. Have to reboot device to get sound every time I turn it on.

Kajjakj

Same here! It has been working fine with Sonos Arc soundbar for months, but now no sound is coming through unless I restart the chromecast every time.

Lefl10

Same here!! Actually came to comment about this.

Toggling to HDR managed to restore audio for me but is there a permanent fix in the works? I even factory reset the device and now going through the whole process of setting up as new again. It's a pain.
