Trying to connect Google Nest Camera to Android TV with Chromecast

GLB_159

Hello. I am trying to connect my Google Nest camera to a TCL Android TV. Unfortunately the TV is incompatible with Google Home which we found is required to be able to view our camera stream on the tv.

We were told by Best Buy Geek Squad to get a Chromecast and pair it to the camera that way would be a way around it.

We got the Chromecast with Google TV. I'm running into a problem setting up Chromecast with the phone. Everything works fine until I try to connect it, it will say "connected" on the tv/chromecast, my phone will say connected but then an error message pops up saying

"Lobby tv may be set up, but we could not communicate with it from your iPhone. Make sure that you have enabled local network access in your privacy settings and try again."

The thing is my iphone local network access is enabled on for Google Home app. I was able to connect to the google nest cam and can view it from my phone app just fine but I want to be able to see it on my TV as well.

I even factory reset the brand new chromecast, my iphone is updated to the latest software, using the latest version of google home app, and I made sure my local network access is on, and I still receive this message.

I've searched multiple articles on how to connect google nest cam to tcl andriod tv, and how to connect google nest cam to chromecast, and I need help. Please does anyone have any solutions? Thank you.

Hi GLB_159,

Thanks for reaching out and for being a step ahead of us. Let's sort this out.

Quick questions: Can you cast videos from Chromecast-enabled apps to your TV, and can you watch directly from the apps installed in your Google TV? Have you tried to use the Google Assistant on the Chromecast Voice Remote to show your Nest Camera on the TV? Please reboot your Chromecast and mobile phone. Also, make sure your phone is connected to the same network as your Chromecast.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer, thanks for getting back to me. To answer your questions.

“Can you cast videos from Chromecast-enabled apps to your TV, and can you watch directly from the apps installed in your Google TV?"

-Yes, I can cast say for example a YouTube video from my phone to the chromecast. We can watch youtube or other streaming services installed on the chromecast.

But our TV is not a Google TV it is a TCL Andriod TV 4-Series S430/S434 model which is not compatible with Google Home and the reason the Best Buy Geeksquad people told us getting a chromecast would be a way around that. But we are still having issues connecting the camera to the tv.

“Have you tried to use the Google Assistant on the Chromecast Voice Remote to show your Nest Camera on the TV?”
-Yes, but it can't find the camera because we can't connect the camera. The camera is a Google Nest Cam | Indoor | Wired | 2nd generation.

And regarding the Nest Camera app on the TV and Chromecast whenever we sign in with our google account it says it isn't recognized. And we can't create a separate Nest account without a google account. We got the camera about a month and a half ago so very recent.

"Please reboot your Chromecast and mobile phone. Also, make sure your phone is connected to the same network as your Chromecast."

- I've rebooted both the chromecast and my phone (making sure local network access in enabled) and can make it several steps in the set up process but I keep running into the issue of finally connecting and getting this error message. "Lobby tv may be set up, but we could not communicate with it from your iPhone. Make sure that you have enabled local network access in your privacy settings and try again."  I have even factory reset the chromecast and I'm still having that error message pop up. It seems this is the last roadblock in getting what we want which is to view the camera on the tv.

And the chromecast, Google Nest Cam, and my phone are all connected to the same network. I've even tried standing between 15-20 feet away from the wifi router and chromecast like I read in another forum and articles and it still won't connect.

I've also read in other forums and articles to just go to the "+" symbol in google home to add a device. I can't find that "+" symbol in the chromecast even if I use google voice assistant but it's in the phone app so that's why I assumed my phone was needed to set up the camera chromecast. Is there a way I can set it up independent of the phone and phone app? I have tried but as I mentioned, I couldn't find any buttons to add devices.

Thank you again for looking into this matter for us I really appreciate it. 🙏

Hi there,

Thanks for the detailed info. Since you are getting a message that your Chromecast cannot communicate with your iPhone, please try to set it up again and this time please try to manually connect first to the Chromecast SSID. Here's how: Go to the phone’s Settings > Open Wi-Fi and connect to the Chromecast SSID (Example: Chromecast1234, Living Room TV, Bedroom TV, etc.) > Go to the Google Home app and try to set up again on the same home where your Nest Camera is linked to.

Once done, please try to command the Google Assistant on your Chromecast Voice Remote to show your Nest Camera.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for the tips, that seems to have helped as I was able to connect to the chromecast and get to the sign in phase where I encountered another problem. It was stuck in sign phase, the Google Home app from my phone said "Signing in to Chromecast with your Google Account" and it was just stuck there for over two hours. And all the TV said was "Setting up Your TV" or chromecast, please refer to your Google Home app for instructions. Something like that.

I had to go but should I just try that same method again when I have more time?

Thank you again for all your help in this matter, we are so close. 🙏

Hi GLB_159,

Thanks for the update. Yes, you can still try the steps. Also, if you're able to connect to the Chromecast SSID but you're still stuck on the sign in page, please exit from the Google Home app and reconnect your phone to your own Wi-Fi network and set it up again.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

Back at it and tried again. This time I was able to finally connect the chromecast (Named: Dance Room TV) to the google home app on my phone. I tried it again using that method you recommended by exiting the app to reconnect my phone to our own Wi-Fi network. I was able to set up everything from my phone app and when I tried to command the Google Assistant on the Chromecast Voice Remote to show the Nest Camera (Named: Dance Room Camera) I got the error message that said "Sorry it looks like dance room tv doesn't support streaming from the Dance Room camera." And on my Google Home phone app it says the device Chromecast named: "Dance Room TV" is a disconnected device.

I don't understand how it got disconnected, the chromecast device and my phone are connected to the same wifi network, and the local network access is enabled on my phone, I never turned it off.

We keep getting closer, I can feel it we're almost there. Again I really appreciate all your help in this project. 🙏

What is the next step I should take? Or what am I missing in trying to connect the google nest camera, to the chromecast, to stream onto the TV?

Thank you.

Hi there,

I'm sorry for the late response. Could you try to set up and connect your Chromecast and camera to a mobile hotspot and check if the same issue will persist?

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hello. Just wanted to thank you for all your help.

Nothing worked, so I'm giving up. We're just going to try and get Geek Squad or someone else to come in and try setting it up.

If there's an alternative to Geek Squad, or Google's version of Geek Squad perhaps could you point us in that direction?

Thanks again.

Hey there GLB_159,

While there is no Google version of Geek Squad, I would recommend that you reach out to Chromecast Support. You just need to follow the prompt, and then you can talk with them via phone call or online chat.

I hope that helps you out, and if you have any other questions or concerns, please let us know!

Best regards,
Jeran
