How do we get an automatic announcement to play for someone's visually impaired elderly mother? These are not routines. These are Google calendar events and we want the speaker to automatically announce "Barb will pick you up in 15 minutes" at certain times when put into the Google calendar. A visual reminder on the phone is not good enough. Please someone answer as quickly as possible because if this cannot work, this Nest is being returned for an Amazon Echo.

Yeh, I couldn't get it to work as well as Alexa can with ironically the Google Calendar.
From a Google Calendar Task (not Event) Google speakers will only announce that there's a notification whereas Alexa tells you what the Google Calendar Event name is one or two times.
Alexa Reminders is just as good and you can also receive SMS Texts in conjunction with verbal Reminders.

Thank you very much for your reply. My friend's mother is nearly blind and has onset of dementia. We worked three hours to try and come up with a solution that would work automatically without her involvement, but nope. Her mother cannot remember "Hey Google" and wants to say "Hello Google" (she is of the hay is for horses generation), so she cannot interact reliably with either speaker. My friend has decided to return (if possible) the Hub and Nest speakers and go with Amazon Alexa, even though the Google speakers are more forgiving with voices. I knew this myself since I had Alexa speakers previously and they often would not understand Chicago-ese. Now I wish I had kept those four speakers instead of resetting them to factory settings and giving them to a charity resale shop.
