Google assistant and Harmony remote control problems

disco_stu
Community Member

I have a Logitech Harmony remote control which supports integration with Google Assistant.  The Harmony shows up as a remote control in the Google home app and supports commands that allows me to control AV devices.

I also have a Nest Audio and a Pixel phone.

With the Harmony device, I should be able to do commands like:

  • Turn up the TV --> Assistant should tell the Harmony remote control to increase the volume on the TV
  • Increase the volume on the TV --> Assistant should tell the Harmony remote to increase the volume on the TV
  • Increase the TV volume by 5 --> Assistant should tell the Harmony remote control to increase the volume 5 times
  • Change the TV to channel 50 --> Assistant should tell the Harmony remote control to change the TV to channel 50

Recently all of these commands stopped working.

If I let the Nest Audio respond to the commands, here's the following result:

  • Turn up the TV --> Assistant says "Sorry I don't understand"
  • Increase the volume on the TV --> Assistant turns it's own volume up rather than telling harmony to turn up the volume on the TV
  • Increase the TV volume by 5 --> Assistant "Sorry I didn't understand"
  • Change the TV to channel 50 --> Assistant "OK Playing 50 on the TV.  Sorry something went wrong and I'm unable to control your home device"

On my phone, here are the results:

  • Turn up the TV --> Assistant turns up the media volume on my phone.
  • Increase the volume on the TV --> Assistant turns up the media volume on my phone.
  • Increase the TV volume by 5 --> Assistant shows a message "Sorry I didn't understand"
  • Change the TV to channel 50 --> Assistant says "Here's 50 on youtube", then plays a 50 cent music video on youtube (the video varies but is always related to the channel number I asked for)

I contacted Google support and they have asked me to reset the Nest Audio, unlink and relink my Harmony device, move the Harmony device to a different room and even setup a new "home" in the Google Home app.  Nothing has fixed the issue.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve the problem?  Does anyone have any ideas to escalate the issue with Google?

I just want the devices to work as intended.

It must be a way to change the volume on command.

If i dont see any prograss on this week

I will buy another universal remote

But i dont know which one will do the work

It's a google assistant problem, not a remote control problem.  The assistant is supposed to know which device is "the TV" and variations of that and know to send the command to the Haromony remote.  This behavour won't change with a different remote.

I also read somewhere that if you don't use Google Home to turn the TV on, then you have to tell Google to "tell harmony to" for any command to work.. I have not actually tried this as I always use Google Home to turn my TV on..

I was having the same issue but found that Google changed the command to "increase the tv volume" or "decrease the tv volume" and you can specify a value to move the increase or decrease by..  Previously, I would just say "increase the tv volume by 5" and it would work but the changes stopped that from working and now that actually changes the volume on the google home device instead of the tv... Hope this works for you as well..

Experience:

Increase/decrease the volume by 10 on TV: does not work

Increase/decrease the volume by 10 on my TV: work

That worked for me too.  But "increase the volume on my TV" didn't work.  There seems to be some problems with their natural language processing (NLP) which should be able to match variations of the device name like any normal human would say them.

I just keep sending feedback through my hubs saying The hub isn’t working with the Logitech Harmony to change channels or increase decrease volume and has been working prior to 2-3 weeks ago. Hopefully Google fixes it soon. Kind of defeats the functionality of the Harmony hub if you don’t have a physical remote or use your cellphone.

I got fed up so I went and got an Amazon Echo dot to give it a try. Well now I control my Harmony with Alexa which works perfectly. Works very well with everything else. The more I work with it the less I work with Google. It also works with Roku. In time I might change all my Google devices (6) and replace them with Amazon based echo system.

I was struggling with this for the past couple of months. So I decided to fire up my Alexa and now everything works like a dream. I think Alexa more responsive and accurate than Google was, but that’s probably bias coming from a non functioning Google solution…

Same here. Alexa is very responsive while Google is struggling through commands. The latter still doesn’t control the Harmony adequately.

I'm getting better results now:

Turn up/down the TV --> Works (most natural for me)

Turn up/down the TV by 10 --> does not work  (most natural for me)

increase/decrease the volume on the TV --> works  (not very natural for me)

increase/decrease the volume on the TV by 10 --> works (not very natural for me)

increase/decrease the volume of the TV -- > doesn't work (I find this more natural than "on the tv")

change the TV to channel 13 --> works

Any response from Google on the harmony integration problem? I noticed when I try to link Harmony it does not show as linked in the app but does show as linked in Google security.  Prior to the problem it would show in the app and show the amount of actions it loaded.

Harmony seems to have linked perfectly  but Google doesn’t responds to commands except to turn on or off  and mute the TV. I fixed the problem by purchasing an Amazon Echo Dot which integrated perfectly with my Harmony and everything else I have ( 40+ devices). So now I have two choices. Either Hey Google or Alexa. I much prefer Alexa to tell you the truth.

All of my commands are working now, but I have to specifically say “on TV”. For instance; I use to say “change channel to HGTV” and it would work. Noooow I have to say “change channel on TV to HGTV”. The same thing with volume. I use to be able to say “turn TV volume down” now I have to say “turn volume down on TV” the same thing goes for every other command. It has to be “command you want” and then “on TV” (or whatever you named your device in Harmony. So now I will try to make a custom Google command to do what I want and just attach the “on TV” command to the custom command. I’ll let everyone know if that ends up working.

Confirmed that when I added routines that I used to use and connected them to the new commands It works fine. I.E. I went into my routines and created a routine that says: when I say: “Hey Google turn up TV volume” then do a custom command of “Turn up volume on TV”.  I did the same thing for changing channels. Added a routine that when I say “Hey Google, Change channel to HGTV” then add a custom command of “change channel to HGTV on TV”.

I am still having a link problem.  Google is now saying "Sorry I couldn't reach Harmony". I have unlinked through Google security and then link in the Google home app and it doesn't show in linked services in the app.

It sounds like you may have routines set up on old commands. Go into your routines and make sure you don’t have any “ask Harmony to” commands.

I checked routines and none exist. Thanks

I noticed even though harmony is not showing linked. Some of my harmony actions still show in the app and there is no way to unlink them

I linked harmony red back after years of not using it and it doesn't show but the TV changes channels when I say hey google ask harmony to  change to channel "4" for example.

Hi all,

I have linked the Google assistant with Logitech Harmony Remote in the past 3 years until last week I unlinked them as some devices added, when I try to re-link the Google assistant with the Harmony again but unsuccessful. After login the Logitech account it shows “We're sorry but your language and/or region is not supported by the Logitech Harmony skill for Google Home.”

But I am in the United English and the language was set as English (UK).

Any one know what’s happen? Please help.

Anthony

We have exactly the same issue here. But settings is English Ireland .

Also asking for help.

regards

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yes the issue is still here.

I have changed my language and region setting in google account, google assistant, google home and Logitech account, but I still can link them up.

Still doesn't work.  Would be great if someone could just restore the app to the old working version.

Everyone, this now appears to be fixed. My old routine which says

Increase Harmony Volume by 15 percent

Now works!!! Thanks Google!

i still need help. none of the recommendations resolved the issue for me. awaiting a fix for why my google assistant no longer recognizes "Hey Google - turn off <name of my Samsung TV>". it happens a few weeks ago and haven't found any fixes yet.
